iOS 14.5’s New Features and More: What Should We Know?
Apple’s operating system update will be released soon, and public beta testing is available now. Sometimes updates are nothing more exciting than bug fixes, but this new release has a few features some customers have been waiting on — such as increased app tracking transparency, and an easy way around Facial ID when wearing a mask. So, what are the new additions in iOS 14.5, and what else do you need to know about it? Here’s what you can look forward to in the new update!
What is iOS 14.5
iOS is the mobile operating system that Apple iPhones run on. Apple’s iOS 14 was released in September 2020, and updates have come out each month since then, but the newest update includes a few exciting new features! The update is currently in public beta testing. That means you can download it now, but it may still have some bugs as Apple is still finalizing the new iOS. The new operating system will become available to anyone with an iPhone sometime soon, though the exact date of release hasn’t been shared. In the meantime, here’s what we know so far about the changes you can expect to see.
iOS 14.5’s new features
App tracking transparency
In recent years, concerns over apps collecting user’s data have grown exponentially. In the new iOS, 14.5 privacy updates will require apps to ask for permission before collecting data and tracking activity. Users will be presented with a pop-up asking for app-tracking authorization, and the user can choose to grant authorization or not.
This new feature is only available to those who own both an Apple Watch and an iPhone updated to iOS 14.5. You can now automatically unlock your iPhone if you’re wearing your unlocked Apple Watch. This removes the issue of facial recognition not functioning well while wearing masks, which is helpful as we continue to experience COVID-19.
Set your favorite music player
The default music player on iPhone is Apple Music, but for many people, that’s not their most-used platform. This update will allow you to select a streaming service from all the platforms installed on your device to play when you ask Siri to stream music. If you typically use Spotify or Amazon music, you can set those as your default instead of Apple Music.
Even more emojis
If you love expressing yourself pictorially, you’re in luck! This update includes over 200 additional emojis. Skin-tone variations are included on more of the emojis depicting people, including couples with a mix of skin tones. The syringe emoji has gotten a 2021 update to better represent COVID-19 vaccines. There’s a heart on fire, a face exhaling, a face with spiral eyes, and more!
The new update makes iPhones more compatible with 5G. iOS 14.5 includes support for 5G in Dual-SIM mode on the iPhone 12 models, which allows you to have two separate lines and services on one phone. This means your work and personal phone numbers can both exist in one place. It’s also useful for those that travel abroad frequently and need a second carrier for that reason. This update also seems to include support for T-Mobile’s 5G network, facilitating better 5G range in some locations.
Apple Maps will get a new update in iOS 14.5, which allows users to input information such as traffic accidents and road hazards. There may also be an addition that allows you to crowdsource information about… crowds. This will help users know how busy a given business or location is at the time of their arrival.
For Apple Fitness Plus users, there’s now support for AirPlay 2. This makes it easy to share your Apple workouts on AirPlay 2 compatible devices — so you can watch your workout video on the big screen.
Updates to Siri
We know Siri as a feminine voice, but with the latest iOS 14.5 update, you can choose the voice of your iPhone assistant. There will be two new voice choices for English speakers. Siri will also now be able to call 911 when prompted with “Hey Siri, call emergency.”
Video game controller compatibility
With iOS and iPadOS 14.5, Apple adds the ability to pair popular game controllers associated with the PS5 and Xbox Series, making playing video games on your phone or tablet easier.
What devices are compatible with iOS 14.5?
The new iPhone operating system 14.5 will be compatible with iPhones starting at iPhone 6 to the new range of iPhone 12s. iPads fun on iPadOS, which will also be updated when the new update comes out.
How can you download iOS 14.5?
If you’d like to download the beta version of iOS 14.5, you can follow the instructions on Apple’s site here. Keep in mind, the beta version isn’t a final version of the operating system and may have bugs.
Once the new system is available to everyone, you’ll get an automated prompt on your smartphone or tablet. This will contain a message asking if you’d like to download it, and all you’ll need to do is click the button to start installing the update. Follow the steps shown on your device screen. It will power down, then reboot running iOS 14.5!
If you don’t want to download the new iOS at that time, you can also follow these steps after dismissing the first notification:
- Open Settings from the gear icon app on your phone
- Click on General (which will also have a gear next to it)
- Then, select Software Update
