Apple 24-inch M1 iMac Review

Apple’s new 24-inch M1 iMac is the first big redesign in the Mac line that Apple has debuted in years! The new iMac offers an extremely sleek and compact design, improved audio and visual capabilities, and the biggest change comes with the M1 chip. The new M1 chip means that the new Mac is faster than ever, plus the compact system means the design can be even sleeker than before.

Pros and Cons of the New 24-inch M1 iMac From Apple

Pros:

  • Thin and light design
  • Vibrant color choices
  • Extremely fast performance
  • Improved webcam, speakers, and microphone
  • 4.5K Retina display

Cons:

  • Fewer ports on the base version
  • No ability to rotate the monitor

What is the M1 chip, and what does it mean for the new iMac?

The biggest update with the new Apple 24-inch M1 iMac is its use of the Apple-designed System on a Chip (SoC). The M1 chip was developed for use in Macs and integrates multiple components. Previously, Apple used Intel chips for their Macs and used multiple chips for CPU, I/O, and security. The M1 chip integrates the CPU, GPU, RAM, Neural Engine, Secure Enclave, SSD controller, image signal processor, encode/decode engines, and more. All these different technologies are able to access the same data through the new unified memory architecture included in the M1 chip, which also helps increase the devices speed. Making the M1 is much faster, smoother, and more efficient than its predecessors.

The only drawback of moving to the in-house chip is that not all apps function fully on it quite yet. Many third-party apps have either already updated to optimize for the new system or are working on updating. If an app hasn’t been updated, it will likely still work because of Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation. However, if they are running through the translation, they may not run as smoothly. As the new M1 chip becomes the system on all Macs, developers will have to make sure apps integrate, but for now, this could cause issues in your workflow.

Design of the Apple 24-inch M1 iMac:

Apple’s design rarely strays far away from minimalism and the 24-inch M1 iMac is no exception. The M1 chip means there isn’t as much space needed for hardware, so the desktop is only 10 pounds total and 11.5 mm thick. The desktop sits on a small stand, which has a hinging action but no ability to rotate.

The 24-inch M1 iMac comes with a 4.5K Retina display, which is an increase in resolution from previous models. The 24-inch screen

Apple has chosen to offer a variety of vibrant and appealing colors. The base price version of the iMac is available in four colors:

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Pink
  • Silver

The models with higher price points include additional colors:

  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Purple

The colors are bright and saturated on the back and sides, with a lighter hue on the front. This could be a fun way to match your hardware to your company brand or brighten up your home office.

Video and Audio:

In a remote work world, the webcam, microphone, and speaker system became even more important! The Apple 24-inch M1 iMac is a step up from previous Mac models. There’s a new three microphone system that transmits clearer audio and effectively reduces background sounds. The new device also offers a six-speaker audio system

The webcam is the best camera system ever included in a mac. The camera now offers 1080p HD video quality, up from 720p in previous versions. This higher resolution makes a big difference in the image quality. Plus, the addition of a larger, improved light sensor captures more light and can help out in low-light conditions.

Price and options for Apple’s 24-inch M1 iMac:

Here’s the breakdown of prices and differences between models on the Mac:

  • $1,299: The base version includes an 8-core CPU and 7-Core GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, two USB ports, and includes a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. Available in only four colors.
  • $1,499: Upgrades the GPU to eight cores, adds ethernet and two additional USB ports. Plus, enjoy Touch ID on the keyboard. Available in all seven colors.
  • $1,699: This price includes everything above but upgrades your storage to 512GB.

The main differences between the base version and the upgraded version are an 8-Core GPU, additional USB ports, and Touch ID capacity. The extra ports might be worth it since two ports can get filled up very quickly. For example, if you need to plug in and charge your keyboard and mouse, you wouldn’t be able to add anything else. Touch ID is an exciting addition as well, so you can unlock your computer with your fingerprint.  Plus, if you love the yellow, orange, or purple version of the 24” iMac you’ll have to choose the upgraded version!

The M1 chip by Apple is an exciting new development in the world of desktops. If you want this brand-new technology for yourself, consider selling your old iMac to Gizmogo. Use the cash to upgrade to the new 24″ M1 model!
