OnePlus X

In 2015, OnePlus released its 3rd smartphone, the OnePlus X. At that time, the company was barely two years old and, as such, should be completely overshadowed by the competition. It didn’t have all the money, experience, and fame that top smartphone producers had, but somehow, it could get its attention in the market. How does the idea of a device with high-end specs, cool design, and a low price sound to you? Now, that’s exactly what OnePlus did.

However, the X didn’t follow the company’s usual pattern. The OnePlus X was a good mid-range smartphone. They, however, encased its average hardware in a premium exterior that gave it the appearance of a phone in the higher end of the mid-range category and sold it as the cheapest phone they’ve ever made.

This budget-friendly device was smaller in all size dimensions, which means it is more convenient to handle. Two versions were made, a more generic one with black glass separated by a metal frame on both sides and a limited edition with a ceramic back. The limited edition was, of course, more expensive, and only 10,000 units were made.

What features puts the OnePlus X in the midrange? It had a single 13MP main camera and an 8MP selfie camera, 16GB of inbuilt storage with expandable storage, a quad-core CPU that doesn’t support 64 bits, and 3GB RAM and an AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080p. Say no more; we have ourselves a mid-range smartphone. It also didn’t have dual-band Wi-Fi or NFC.

None of these features will prevent efficient phone use, though, so they’re not deal-breakers, at least not at that time. If you own a OnePlus X, you should consider selling or upgrading. You can sell your OnePlus X easily on Gizmogo.

OnePlus X Specifications

Design info: They say it’s the same size and weight as the iPhone 6s, but it’s good enough for us that the OnePlus X looks good. It was stylish and had a modern appearance. Only a few mid-range phones could boast of the premium look and material that the X had. Both sides of the device were made of glass, and an aluminum frame brings the parts into one piece. It can be considered a ‘mini’ because of its size, but it feels very comfortable to use and doesn’t slide off easily, thanks to the grooves in its frame.

It’s almost completely rectangular if not for its diagonal and slightly round corners. With the screen off, it’s almost all black.

If fingerprint smudges are a concern to you, then too bad, the OnePlus X does retain every print that comes in contact with its body. OnePlus has a translucent case that solves this problem.

There are three available models, defined by their color and materials used for their back panel; the Oynx black with glass back, the limited-edition ceramic back paneled OnePlus X, and the Champagne colored one. The Oynx black model is the one you’ll typically find around.

The bezel is large and accommodates three capacitive buttons below the screen. They don’t have backlighting, so they’re hard to see, but you need to get used to where they are. Above the screen, the speaker grille and front-facing camera are there, at the center.

The back panel is non-removable and houses the main camera and its LED on the top left. The power button and volume control are on the right side, while the Alert Slider takes the top left side. The speakers, headphone jack, and USB port are underneath.

Audio info: The X has a decent audio output system. Loudness is just a bit above average, but sadly, headphones reduce both the quality and loudness.

Capacity info: The storage capacity of the OnePlus X is 16GB but with a micro SDcard slot for expansion. It’s either a dual SIM or one SIM and an SDcard.

Size & weight info: Its dimensions are 140 x 69 x 6.9mm, and it weighs 138g.

Display info: The X has a 5-inch display. It uses an AMOLED panel and a resolution of 1080 x 1920, which earns it 441ppi. For its size, this resolution was enough to produce vibrant, clear, detailed images and texts. Viewing angles are great; what isn’t so good is its color accuracy. If you’re outdoors, you’ll also have some trouble viewing your screen, even on maximum brightness. You get Gorilla Glass 3 protection, though, for the screen and back panel.

Camera and video recording info: The rear camera is a single 13MP shooter. In front, there’s an 8MP selfie camera. Colour accuracy on the main camera is good; photos are sharp and detailed but don’t expect image stabilization or laser autofocus seen in the company’s flagship. It records videos only in 1080p.

Water-resistance info: The OnePlus X is not resistant to water.

Performance info: The OnePlus X Snapdragon 801 and 3GB RAM can provide smooth multitasking and navigation experience. Thankfully, the UI is great and responsive. It runs on Android 5.1.1 and is upgradable to OxygenOS 2.2.3.

Connectivity info: The OnePlus X is LTE enabled. It has Wi-Fi, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, GPS with GLONASS, BDS, FM radio, and USB 2.0.

Battery info: The non-removable battery on this device has a 2525mAh capacity. It is average and supplies 16 hours of 3G talk time and 7 hours of video playback. You’ll probably need to charge twice a day if you use it regularly.
