iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen (2017)

Can the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) replace your laptop? Well…it depends.

For instance:

If you use a laptop for browsing and editing a few videos, the iPad Pro (2017) won’t give you any problems. But the limited storage, memory, and CPU, doesn’t make your iPad Pro (2017) a laptop killer.

On the other hand, the iPad Pro 2020 and 2021 are in a completely different league. With storage and memory options as high as 2TB and 16GB, these tablets are insanely responsive and capable of replacing laptops.

There’s just one thing:

These tablets are expensive.

But you don’t have to let finance get in the way of owning one of these beasts.

There are tons of people who’d love to snatch up your iPad Pro (2017). And I know exactly where you can find them.

These people use Gizmogo to buy and trade devices on a continuous basis. But before I tell you how you  can prepare your iPad Pro for the market, let’s take a brief look at your device.

OVERVIEW

The iPad Pro (2017) is a very capable and sturdy laptop. It’s like having a brand new iPad Air with Pro features like Apple ProMotion.

It’s not as fast as the new iPad Air, but you can shed off a benjamin if you play your cards right. With accessories like keyboard and pencil, you’ll be happy you did. Besides, this laptop is for social media, streaming, and light business work not full blown software suites and hardcore gaming. Using the iPad Pro (2017) for light tasks, you’ll hardly tell the difference in processing speed.

Before we get into the full specs, let’s discuss how you can sell or trade your iPad Pro (2017).

Design

The design of the iPad Pro 2nd generation is pretty much identical to the 3rd generation. Putting both tablets next to each other, you can hardly tell the difference.

These two variations of Pro models still have TouchID instead of FaceID on their chassis. There are also volume buttons, power/lock button, lighting port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and four-speaker grilles (two on top and two on bottom) on the chassis. And the speakers are loud enough to fill a whole room.

The tablet is enormous. Even though Apple introduced the 12.9-inch screen back in 2017, it’s still the largest display Apple has available. A smart move. The iPad Pro’s dimensions are already bigger than any iMac available. Any bigger, the iPad Pro becomes too cumbersome for any practical mobile application.

Accessories

To get the most out of your iPad, you need accessories, which sucks because accessories are separate and expensive. But at least there are only two: the Smart Keyboard and the Apple Pencil.

Unfortunately, the Magic Keyboard isn’t available for the iPad Pro (2017) model. The Magic Keyboard is a no-compromise keyboard. The keys are easy to press that have excellent feedback. Plus, you get a touchpad.

The Smart Keyboard is basically the opposite. You have to do a little more work in pressing down the keys. And there’s no touchpad, which can get annoying after a while. But the Smart Keyboard is still way better than using the touch keyboard or Bluetooth ones.

The next iPad Pro accessory is the Apple Pencil.

The Apple Pencil makes the most sense if you’re an artist or if you’re planning on taking a lot of notes or filling out web forms.

Only Apple’s first-generation Pencil is available for the iPad Pro (2017). The Pencil has a low 20ms latency – but with the iPadOS update, you get 9ms latency. So when you’re writing, sketching, or drawing, the line appears almost instantly.

Display

The screen is 2732 x 2048 resolution with 256 PPI.

What sets the iPad Pro screen apart from other iPads is Apple ProMotion. ProMotion doubles the refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz. In other words, ProMotion improves screen responsiveness, scroll, and input.

ProMotion also takes Apple Pencil to another level. You get a near-realistic writing experience. The line goes from appearing almost instantly to instantly, no matter how fast you write.

Apple Pencil is still missing that subtle vibration you get when using a real pencil. Luckily, Apple is experimenting with haptic feedback technology in their Pencils to solve that problem.

ProMotion also enhances video response. Combine ProMotion with True Tone Technology, and you’ll get a clean, crisp, smooth video that uses over one thousand unique combinations that automatically adjust color and brightness based on ambient light.

Camera

iPad cameras are best for work-related tasks. Rarely you’ll see anyone hauling around a ginormous tablet for picture’s sake.

Therefore, the iPad Pro cameras aren’t as good as iPhone cameras.  But 12MP is still more than enough for augmented reality applications.

In majority opinion, AR is better on the iPad than on any smartphone. It’s a more interactive experience.

The front camera has a 7MP camera. One word: FaceTime… Or is that two words? Either way, I wouldn’t plan on taking selfies.

Software

Performance is excellent if this was an iPhone. But not so much for a device that’s intended to replace your laptop.

One thing that’s holding the iPad Pro back was not having its own operating system. In mid-2019, Apple addressed this issue and released an operating system specifically for iPads.

iPadOS 14 takes advantage of the unique features on the iPads.

For example, Scribble is a feature that works with the Apple Pencil. It allows Pencil to function outside of note and drawing applications. So you can use the Apple Pencil with anything that has a text cursor.

Scribble also converts handwriting into typed text. Written data like phone numbers, locations, and email addresses automatically turn into clickable links.

Scribbles also have a feature called shape recognition. It can automatically correct uneven shapes like lines, squares, and circles.

iPadOS 14 provides updates in ARKit, gaming, apps, and search akin to macOS.

Battery Life

There were tons of complaints about the iPad Pro not being sufficient in the battery department.

Surprisingly, the battery capacity in the iPad Pro (2017) exceeds that of its successor. It has a 10,875mAh battery compared to 9720mAh found in Apple’s 3rd generation iPads.

That’s very impressive.

The iPad Pro (2017) battery life even exceeds a MacBook—albeit the MacBook operates more complex tasks. With the new iPadOS 14 updates, you can expect battery life to take a hit.

The battery takes forever to charge. And don’t even think about charging your iPad while in use. It’ll never top off. Your best bet is to invest in a USB-to-Lightning cable. Although it’s an extra accessory you have to pay for, it cuts your charging time tremendously.

When you do get a full charge, it’ll easily last you all day long.

TechRadar reported streaming an entire television series (7.5+ hours on medium-bright) and still had more than 25% left in the tank.

Even at full brightness, the iPad Pro (2017) lost only 21% in 90 minutes of playing HD video.

Very impressive.

CONCLUSION

That pretty much wraps everything up.

Now it’s all up to you.

Will you sell your iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) for cash, or maybe you’ll like to trade it in for something else of your choosing?

Either way, make sure you get the best deals and services by using sites like Gimogo as a medium for trade.
