Microsoft Surface series started in 2012 with the Surface RT. Two years later, in May 2014, we saw the then head of Microsoft’s Surface, Panos Panay, try to convince an audience of tech analysts that Microsoft had finally developed everyone’s dream device – the Surface Pro 3.
The Surface Pro 3 is what you want it to be, a laptop; when you have some serious work to do, a tablet; for the more fun stuff.
This can be achieved by simply removing the keyboard and holding the Stylus in your hand.
Microsoft actually had different models for its Surface Pro 3, and the processor and internal storage differentiate them. The Surface Pro uses Intel’s 4th generation core processors, which are the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and the Intel Core i7, all outfitted with either 64 GB/128GB of internal storage with a 4GB RAM or 256 GB/ 512GB internal memory and 8 GB of RAM.
The Surface Pro 3 i5 uses Intel core i5 -4300U processor with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
There’s also a Surface Pro 3 Core i5 model that features 8GB RAM/ 256GB. This Surface Pro 3 i5 model packs a CPU with 1.9 to 2.9 GHz and a 15 W TDP, making it up to two times faster in processing speed than the Surface Pro 3 i3 model but at the expense of increased power consumption. More power means more heat and less battery, but the difference isn’t substantial compared to the i3 model.
The Pro 3 i5 is a more powerful tablet than the i3, which means it will handle more tasking activities better and faster than the i3. While it may produce more heat, thermal tests on the device and CPU operation have shown that its overall application performance is unaffected by heat-related processing. Your Surface Pro 3 i5 won’t slow down in operation; neither will there be any stutters or any other disadvantage when compared with the i3.
Despite all its advantage, the Surface Pro 3 i5 is still behind the i7 variant and the next-gen device that have been released in recent years. If you want to upgrade, consider selling your Surface Pro 3 i5 to fund your purchase or swapping for another device on Gizmogo.
Design info: The designs of all Surface Pro 3 models are almost identical. It has an imposing outer appearance with an elegance that speaks of luxury and sophistication. Yet, the Surface Pro 3 has a hush around its loudness, a simplicity that can be felt around all the radiance. Microsoft discontinued the VaporMg case branding, but the Pro 3 i5, like other Pro 3 models, has a well-built magnesium casing without any joints or any bend anywhere on the case.
The craftsmanship is perfect; all ports, buttons, and curves are in a perfect position, all emerging subtly from the surface of the device.
The case was revised from older models to accommodate a more comfortable feel and usability. For example, the kickstand of this Surface Pro is the best so far, allowing more versatility than is even required, and that is something to applaud.
The device is heavy but thin, still heavy enough to know not to hold it at one end for too long. Meanwhile, the “laptop” that Microsoft tried to achieve in this 2 in 1 tablet didn’t quite meet up in the sense that it fails to sit well on the lap.
The Surface Pen uses batteries and has 3 buttons that make taking on the Surface Pro 3 much easier and more fun.
A 3.5mm headphone jack and two stereo speakers with fairly good sound are present.
Capacity info: The Surface Pro 3 i5 is fitted with internal storage, specifically a Hynix HFS128 GB SSD. Another storage option of the Surface Pro 3 i5 models is the 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM, but if you desire to expand your memory, there’s space for additional storage with an external SDXC.
Size and Weight info: The Surface Pro 3 i5 weighs 810 grams which is actually much less than the Surface Pro 2, an apparently smaller but thicker tablet in the series. The dimensions of the tablet are 292.1 x 201.5 x 9.1.
The Surface Pro is almost as thin as a normal-sized phone; it is less than a millimeter thicker than the iPhone 5. Calling this device the “thinnest Core product ever created” is Microsoft blowing their trumpet, but we all agree that it is pretty impressive.
Display info: The Surface Pro 3’s 12-inch screen is a major feature. This large screen attribute tips the balance of the Surface Pro more towards the laptop side than the tablet. It has 216.33 pixels per inch and 2160 x 1440 resolution.
Adopting a 3:2 aspect ratio, the Surface Pro 3 has a smoother transition between the landscape and portrait mode. There are no reasons to criticize the viewing angles, but the color hue appears dampened. The touchscreen supports 10 points multi-touch and is as good as the best modern screen touch around.
Camera and video recording info: The Surface Pro 3 is not a great picture taker. The front and rear are fitted with 5MP cameras that take washed-out pictures. Both cameras can, however, record videos in 1080p.
Water-resistance info: The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 i5 wasn’t designed to be water-resistant.
Chip info: The Surface 3 Pro i5 is outfitted with Intel Core i5, a more capable processor than Apple’s A7 SoC. This Core i5-4300U can boost from its baseline rate of 1.9Ghz to 2.9 without a decrease in operation due to thermal disturbances.
Connection info: All models of Microsoft Surface Pro 3 are incorporated with a Wireless-AC 2 x 2 Marvell AVASTAR network controller that is Bluetooth 4.0 and HS embedded. Using this adapter with the Pro 3 i5 has no problems at all and is very reliable. Microsoft sells an Ethernet Adapter that uses the only available USB port but has amazing connection speeds that can reach up to 1 gigabyte per second.
Battery info: The device boasts up to 9 hours of uninterrupted web surfing.
