OnePlus 6

In November 2017, OnePlus released an update to the OnePlus 5, the OnePlus 5T, and its sole intention was to provide an 18:9 screen to keep up with the flagship trend, else the OnePlus five ad 5T are the same. Barely six months later, in May 2018, OnePlus introduced an upgrade to the 5T, and it wasn’t called the 5TT; it’s the OnePlus 6, with a 19:9 screen.

OnePlus six is on the higher end of the smartphone spectrum and was more than a simple upgrade in specs from the 5T. It now uses a protective glass back panel, doing away with the aluminum used in previous models. The manufacturers also mentioned something about some water-proof features, even though this was inconclusive.

The OnePlus six also has an upgraded processor, offers more inbuilt storage, and doesn’t cost a fortune despite being a flagship in the class of the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9. OnePlus called its display an “optic” AMOLED, and its camera hardware is quite impressive with its 16MP primary camera with larger sensors and 20MP secondary camera.

As you’ll expect of Android flagships, it used the most recent processor available and combined it with at least 6GB of RAM. There was even a Marvel Avengers limited edition that came with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

While the OnePlus 6 is a great smartphone, it only struggles to come close to Samsung and Apple in terms of specs. Still, since these brands and their flagship smartphones have been skyrocketing in price, the OnePlus 6, which costs about half, offers tremendous value to smartphone users.

OnePlus 6 Specifications

Design info: The new appearance of the OnePlus 6 was probably its most striking feature compared to its immediate predecessor. The OnePlus 5 and older models had metal chassis, but that was changed here, giving the OnePlus six glass panels on the front and back. It’s Gorilla Glass protected, and OnePlus promised that it is just as durable as the previous metal-bodied models.

The phone isn’t completely rid of metal, though; the glass panels are sandwiched between a thin metal frame. It is available in two finishes – midnight matte black and a highly polished glossy black finish. The glossy model appears more appealing, but it can’t help attracting fingerprints. The matte finish is also nice and doesn’t attract fingerprints, but it has more friction and is more likely to slip off your hand. The pack comes with a silicone case that offers a good grip and extra protection for the phone.

The OnePlus 6 has a super-thin bezel and a notch to accommodate the camera, earpiece, and display sensors to provide more screen area without increasing phone size.

The buttons and ports on the device are; the power button on the right, an alert slider on the same side, the volume rockers on the left, along with a SIM card slot, USB-C port, loudspeaker, and headphone jack on the bottom.

The camera is aligned with the fingerprint scanner in the center on the rear side, unlike the top left corner; it sits on the five and 5T.

Audio info: The loudness of the OnePlus is satisfactory, and its output is almost flawless. Its loudspeakers perform better than its headphone output as there’s a bit of degradation to average sound quality.

Capacity info: There’s no expandable storage. It has either 64GB; 6GB RAM, or 128GB; 6GB RAM or 256GB; 8GB RAM.

Size & weight info: The size of the OnePlus six is defined by dimensions of 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.8mm. It weighs 177g.

Display info: The OnePlus 6 has a 6.28-inch notched Optic AMOLED screen with an aspect ratio of 19:9. Its resolution is 1080 x 2280 pixels which it a pixel density of 402. It has a maximum brightness that is good for outdoor use reaching 456nits.

It is Gorilla Glass 5 protected and has a notch that doesn’t interfere with your display. The display is very colorful and has good viewing angles too. It is also vibrant and sharp and allows you to tweak the colors to suit your taste if you’re not satisfied with the default.

Camera and video recording info: The rear camera has a dual set-up comprising a 16MP wide lens and primary camera coupled with a 20MP secondary camera. The image quality on this camera is good; it has an impressive definition and dynamic range without oversharpening. A front-facing camera is a 16MP unit which is also good. Video recording begins from 4K @30 or 60fps down to 720p @480 fps for the rear camera. The selfie camera records in 1080p @ 30fps.

Water-resistance info: Flagship phones with glass back panels are known for having wireless charge and water resistance features, and we expected it from the OnePlus 6. Sadly, it doesn’t support wireless charging, and its water resistance is controversial. It is splash-proof, though, and the manufacturers say it won’t be affected by rain, but you should probably not go swimming with it.

Performance info: The OnePlus 6 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core chipset and Adreno 630 GPU. It runs on Android 9.1 and is upgradable to Android 11 OxygenOS.

Connectivity info: Nothing is absent here except FM radio. Wi-FI, dual-band, DLNA, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, BDS, GALILEO, GLONASS, NFC, and USB-C 2.0.

Battery info: The battery life is very good, providing up to 14 ½ hours of video playback and a little over 9 hours when used non-stop over Wi-Fi. All these are from its 3300mAh non-removable battery.
