In a mashup of comic book villains and fantasy worlds that has never been seen before, Warner Bros Japan is readying fans for an epic anime series that will unleash mayhem on fans of DC comic books and anime alike. Ready yourselves for Suicide Squad Isekai, which is about to launch on MAX and Hulu in the US with a triple-episode premiere on 27 June.
At the centre of this daring genre-jump is a redemption story, a horror story, and most of all, a survival story. An unstable group of villains includes the Joker’s ex, Harley Quinn, as well as familiar DC names Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, King Shark and more, all of whom have been transported to an Isekai – a ‘different world’, or so it’s known in Japanese – filled with swords, sorcery and mythological creatures. Their boss Amanda Waller, the mastermind behind a life-or-death mission, has forced this Suicide Squad of Gotham’s worst felons into a fantasy world far away from the grimy concrete alleyways where they usually haunt.
It was a wait worth having, Warner Bros. Japan Anime announced last week, as the first three episodes will premiere on MAX and Hulu on 27 July in the US only, a triple threat premiere guaranteed to be a front-loading hit. (Fans in other countries: fear not. The series will premiere internationally on ADN in France; on HBO GO in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Hong China; on Aniplus and Laftel in Korea.)
There is no hyperbole in referring to the animated prowess exhibited through ‘Suicide Squad Isekai’. Animated by WIT Studio, the same house that brought some of anime’s biggest hits in recent times in Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, the show is already in anticipation for its plot as it is in anticipation for the visual feast that is to come. At Anime Expo 2021, when the show was first announced, the buzz was positive and it become clear that this is not just another anime series, but a pioneer in the subgenre that melds two separate worlds of DC Comics and Isekai anime.
While the English voice cast has yet to be unveiled, the Japanese voice cast is stacked to the hilt with some of the best talent to ever grace an anime room: Harley Quinn voiced by Anna Nagase; Joker voiced by Yuuichirou Umehara; Takehito Koyasu, Jun Fukuyama, Subaru Kimura, Chika Anzai – the list goes on.
But Suicide Squad Isekai is not about the journey – it’s about the race. Our heroes have only 72 hours to carry out their dangerous assignment, which makes for a tense high-stakes adventure intertwined with dark humour and heart. Action, fantasy, comedy and drama come together in this high-quality production with a beautiful fantasy world, packed with battles with orcs, dragons, and more.
But the fun doesn’t end with the premiere; airing weekly for 10 episodes every Thursday, the series will be non-stop action, intrigue and drama all summer long. So whether you are a comic-book geek in the DC Universe, a fan of anime, or just looking for your new addiction on this streaming platform, Suicide Squad Isekai is where you need to be this summer on MAX and Hulu.
And the person who’s going to help bring it to TV screens across the US is MAX — a role that’s a perfect fit considering the sheer variety of content it includes, going across a wide range of genres. MAX is the place to go for great entertainment! That’s why it has teamed up with Hulu to bring you this anime of a lifetime, Suicide Squad Isekai. It truly is going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. With an easy search function and an incredible variety of content, from old-school Japanese anime to the latest movies, MAX has you covered. You’ll never have to miss a moment of the action, the drama, or the jaw-dropping twists of Suicide Squad Isekai on MAX.
