OnePlus 5

The OnePlus 5 was the fourth flagship from the Chinese manufacturers. Launched in 2017, the brand had only been around for a few years, and they were already recognized as a top company in the smartphone industry. They sourced for consumer attention and loyalty by producing quality smartphones that undercut its daunting competition. The result of this strategy is evident as they’ve been able to carve a niche for themselves in the flagship smartphone market among stronger competitors like Apple, Samsung, Google, and Huawei.

You’ll typically find almost every flagship feature you want in a high-end smartphone on a OnePlus ongoing flagship, and it will sell for much lower than its biggest competition. The OnePlus 5 was no different.

It was powered by the chipset that powered all the top smartphones that year, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, and while the best of them coupled this with an 8GB RAM, the OnePlus has 6GB RAM at the same time, a more premium version with 8GB. It has a metal body and a 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 protected screen, its AMOLED display is top-notch, and its camera is flagship-worthy. It had the automatic background blur effect that was in vogue and also featured lossless zoom.

On the other hand, there are areas where the OnePlus five falls short. The fact that it has no certified ingress protection is a significant lag for a flagship. Even splashproof would have been appreciated! Also, it lacks expandable storage, which is especially grave for its 64GB model, and there are no loudspeakers.

But hey, what’s the quickest way to recognize a flagship? Its design. OnePlus knows this, and they have always delivered design quality worthy of flagship phones. The premium look on the OnePlus 5 is similar to the iPhone 7+ even though the relatively large bezel is not so fancy.

Only six months after its release, the OnePlus five was upgraded to the 5T. Since then, there have been several upgrades since then, and if you’d like to change your smartphone, you can begin by selling your OnePlus 5 to us @ Gizmogo for a suitable upgrade.

OnePlus 5 Specifications

Design info: It is hard not to mention that the OnePlus 5 took design cues from the iPhone 7. Everybody says that because it’s true, but that’s just about where the similarity ends. Still, the OnePlus showed some dignity and didn’t copy and paste Apple’s design. It is narrower and shorter and packs less weight.

The back panel is metal, made of aluminum, and given a smooth black matte finish. This color, the positioning of the camera and LED, the noise cancellation mic, and the logo placement make it hard to say the OnePlus 5 had nothing to do with the iPhone 7’s design.

The metal picks up fingerprints and smudges, but the black color hides it well. It is a slippery device, though, but all you need to do is get one of OnePlus’ iconic cases. There isn’t so much going on at the back, though, apart from the 1+ logo and the nearly visible antenna inlays. Of course, there’s the camera on the top left with its dual-LED flash.

The device’s front has what looks like a home button embedded in the large bezel below the screen. It’s not exactly a physical button, just a touch area. Flanking it are customizable, capacitive keys.

On the side, there’s a “horizon line” in the frame that sort of demarcates front and back. The power button and tray for two nano SIMs are on the right; the other side has the Alert Slider and volume buttons. The USB port, the primary mic, headphone jack, and loudspeaker are on the bottom.

Audio info: The audio of this device is crystal clear and loud. Headphones may reduce their loudness but not the quality.

Capacity info: Its inbuilt storage and memory are either 64GB and 6GB RAM or 128GB with 8GB RAM.

Size & weight info: The dimensions of this device are 154.2 x 74.1 x 7.25mm, and its weight is 153 grams. It was the slimmest phone that the company had produced and was lighter than its predecessor.

Display info: The screen comprises a 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, an aspect ratio of 16:9, a screen to body ratio of 73%, and a pixel density of 401. While some may raise alarms that it’s not a Quad HD display, it is practically hard to tell the difference as the resolution here is vibrant and sharp, more than sufficient for this device.

Camera and video recording info: The main camera is a dual 16MP wide and 20MP standard camera. A selfie camera is a 16MP unit. Video recording maxes out at 4K for the rear camera and 1080p for the selfie camera. Both cameras perform tremendously well.

Water-resistance info: There is no water-resistance feature for the OnePlus 5.

Performance info: It used the Snapdragon octa-core 835 processor and was the cheapest phone to use this chipset. It ran on Android 7.1.1 and is upgradable to Android 10OxygenOS 10.0.

Connectivity info: it is a Global 4G LTE device with dual-channel Wi-Fi, DLNA, hotspot, Bluetooth 5.0 with A2DP, LE and aptX HD, GPS with GLONASS, GALILEO and BDS, NFC, and Type-C USB. OnePlus is known for excluding FM radio in its comms.

Battery info: Its battery is a 3300mAh unit that supports a fast charge at 20W. 3G talk time will last about 20 hours, and Wi-Fi web browsing brings the battery to zero in 11 hours. It’s not so bad, and the dash charge feature allows you to give it a rapid boost.
