It sits in the cosmos somewhere between Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and the upcoming season two of the Disney+ series Andor, an under-the-radar hit whose cinematic scope, eerie tone and committed performances brought some real gravitas to the beloved sci-fi franchise that didn’t involve a tuxedoed Golden Droid one way or another. The show follows Diego Luna’s rebel spy Cassian Andor in his years leading up to the events of Rogue One, when Andor helps steal the plans for the Death Star. Andor, which debuted last fall, quickly became my favourite TV show of the year and my most anticipated show of 2023, when it returns with the beloved, sassy pilot K-2SO (played by Alan Tudyk) back online.
But the challenge of playing Cassian Andor, the Rebel spy at the centre of Star Wars: Andor, looks to have brought out the actor’s best and most nuanced performance yet, spanning the first season of the Disney+ show and delving into the early days of the Rebel Alliance. ‘I mean, I couldn’t wait for K-2SO [to return], man,’ Luna told the Los Angeles Times, in one of many interviews where he expressed his love for both the droid and the actor, Alan Tudyk, who embodied its deadpan mechanical humour and sardonic grumpiness. What appears to be a reunion on screen is a major TV moment, considering K-2SO’s absence from the first season, and an important one to the show’s fans.
Tony Gilroy’s visionary directorial voice is the primary guiding light here. Writes Luna: ‘Gilroy is a master storyteller whose genius for human motivation and complex relationships has bestowed a richness and psychological vitality on the Star Wars universe. His vision was unwavering, yet open to collaboration. When he wanted something transformed, it was done. It was such a gift. He’s a true raconteur. People flock to him.’ and: ‘Andor most definitely has legs’ The story Gilroy tells becomes a story to investigate further.
*Andor*’s first season was celebrated for its depth and richness of storytelling, action and character – not to mention its world-building – and for placing a completely different kind of story, set in the foundation years of the Rebel Alliance, front and centre within the Star Wars universe. In its narrative of espionage, resistance and hard-nosed determination, embedded in the ‘grayness’ of the galaxy, it struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. The return of K-2SO in the show’s second series can only add to the narrative’s complexity, with the droid’s trademark humour and emotion serving the rebel cause.
His sharp-witted, droll loyalty added a vital shiny-metallic soul to the Star Wars canon, a heartier counterweight than the usual saga angst. His relationship with Cassian Andor, by turns respectful and bickering (droidly) throughout their first film together, offered a familiar, rollicking connection that made their leap into the vast galactic unknown somehow more manageable – an endearing and wholly believable element to an otherwise dark, grandiose narrative. Now, fans eagerly await returning to a galaxy far, far away with K-2SO – a galaxy not without darkness – one that is tracklight-brightened with his extravagant, cynical, loyal humour.
Without an official date for season two, their excitement is fed by Luna’s unabashed enthusiasm and the creative muscle of Gilroy, and the empire of fandom is abuzz at what *Andor*’s second season might bring to the fire with K-2SO coming back to the franchise and bringing with him a new bit of light and laughter to this galaxy.
Star Wars is filled with battle and mateship, and anyone looking to break free. But, more than anything, Andor reminds us of the power and promise of story. Whether it’s the masterful guidance of Tony Gilroy, the promise of K-2SO’s glorious return, or the continuing Star Wars of this next season, there is endless adventure to be found. As we stare up at the sky and await the return of Andor, the stars above remind us of the endless possibilities of action, bravery, and the power of the connection between characters and fans alike.
She’s a beacon of hope in this cosmic adventure, the star that guides our heroes through the darkness to ensure Andor and its rebel crew will have a place in the grand Star Wars canon. We continue giddily along for the ride with Diego Luna and the rest of the cast as they launch into an unknown space, hoping that Gilroy’s brilliance and K-2SO’s charm can lead to another season of cinematic joy among the stars.
