The iPhone 8 Plus is essentially the same design as the iPhone 7 Plus. In fact, the 8 Plus will perfectly fit in the 7 Plus case. The only difference is the glass back. Apple claims that the glass is stronger than ever. But you’ll still want to use a protective case with these phones. There have already been hundreds of cases of the iPhone 8 Plus shattering when dropped on a hard surface.
To its benefit, the weight of the iPhone 8 is a little heavier than the 7 Plus. Therefore, the phone sits snugly in your hands. The iPhone 8 comes in four colors: gold, silver, space gray, and product red. Other than that, the design is really nothing to brag about. It really looks like the 4th generation of iPhone 6—if you ask me.
The extrusive camera bump, large bezel, and home button doesn’t look too good compared to today’s standards. So if you’re looking for a new-ish design, you’ll have to look at the iPhone X. But if you’re not trying to win the popularity contest, the iPhone 8 Plus is still a good-looking phone.
The iPhones’ color accuracy was always considered the best in the market. Apple up the ante by adding True Tone technology. Using front sensors on the phone, True Tone gathers ambient light and adjusts screen brightness on the fly.
It’s easy to activate.
Under display and brightness settings, there’s a True Tone Off/On toggle. While on, you won’t even notice the technology going to work. So instead of you manually changing the brightness, True Tone will calculate which brightness setting is optimal for your eyes.
The speakers on the iPhone 8 Plus are 25-percent louder than the iPhone 7. And you get two sets of speakers: one on the bottom and the other in the earpiece.
Continuing the tradition of the wireless headset, the iPhone 8 is missing the 3.5mm headphone jack. So you’ll have to either buy one of Apple’s five W1-enabled headphones or a wireless headset from a third party.
The Apple Lightning 3.5mm headphone jack is also another option. While it started off rocky, the jack has come a long way. So you can still use your 20th-century technology—reliably—before returning back to the future.
The iPhone 8 Plus uses the QI standard for wireless charging.
You’ll be able to generate around 5W from the wireless charging pad. Although the wireless charging is slow, it’ll come in handy on a nightstand or while driving.
Don’t count on using this wireless system for a quick charge—it’s not built for that. Think of the pad as a way to top off your phone in between sessions.
If you need to charge your phone quickly, the iPhone 8 Plus supports high-powered chargers that you’ll have to buy separately. While any charger will work, you’ll get the best results with the 29W USB- MackBook charger, which can fully charge your phone in under an hour.
Strangely, the iPhone 8 Plus battery is smaller than the previous iPhone 7. Apple says that the battery consumption is the same. This is due to the newer processor in the 8 Plus being more efficient than the 7’s.
If you need to save battery life routinely, the 8 Plus has a low-power mode that could come in handy.
As a response to being humiliated, Apple fired back at Google and Samsung by giving their iPhone 8 Plus a much-needed camera upgrade. While the Pixel XL still has a better camera, the iPhone 8 is at least better than the S8.
And like the Pixel XL, the iPhone 8 Plus HDR mode stays on to give you more details and contrast in dark spots. What you get is two 12MP cameras: one wide and the other telephoto with optical image stabilization. This gives you 5x Zoom and prevents your shaky hands from making the image blurry.
But one pretty slick feature found on 8 Plus that’s not on the 7 Plus is Portrait Lighting.
Portrait Lighting is the next evolution to the previous Portrait Mode, which you can find on both the iPhone 7 Plus and the 8 Plus. There’s a ton of mixed feelings about Portrait Lighting—you either love it, or you don’t care.
Mimicking pro lighting setups, Portrait Lighting comes in four modes: Studio, Contour, Stage, and Stage Mono. There’s really nothing special going on in the first two modes. All it does is manipulate light around your face.
On the other hand, Stage and Stage Mono mode is pretty cool—if Apple ever gets it right. You have to see it for yourself. But essentially, it’s a blacked-out background. Don’t get me wrong: Portrait Lighting is fun to play with, but you’ll hardly use it for anything practical, at least for now.
The iPhone 8 Plus has the same A11 Bionic chip as the iPhone X. As expected, the A11 is faster than the A10 processors. This is mainly because the A11 actively manages six active cores—two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores—compared to the A10’s four.
Inside the A11, there’s Apple’s first in-house GPU. Interestingly, Apple was nearly sued by their previous partners Interactive Technologies, claiming that Apple copied their design. But nothing ended up happening.
While you won’t notice a huge power boost over the iPhone 7 Plus, you’re getting significantly more headroom for intense tasks like gaming and augmented reality.
Like I said, you really get to experience what A11 is truly about when using augmented reality (AR) apps. With more and more companies developing AR apps, it would be nice to have a phone that can handle it. The iPhone 8 has worked with several AR apps without interruptions.
So the iPhone 8 can come in handy by using AR apps to preview furniture in your home, glasses on your face, and so much more. Apple is well aware of AR being the future and is lightyears ahead of even Google’s attempt to master the platform.
