We can step into a simulation created at the tap of a finger With Google continuing its lead as the tech world’s crown jewel, its most recent innovation, Circle to Search, showed that the sci-fi future is an AI-powered feature of mobile devices, today at the latest. What we saw in Google I/O 2024 won’t be a highlight of the past. It’s a vision of the future.
In its rollout with the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8, Circle to Search immediately hit a chord with tech consumers around the world. A Google blog post from August 2023 illustrates that it’s now a fixture in more than 100 million devices – and the goal is to double that number by the end of 2024. Being adopted by the Android ecosystem is truly a turning point in human-techie interactions, and Google is taking the lead for us.
Imagine simply being able to search the web for information on anything on your screen – text or images, regardless of whatever app you’re in. That is what Circle to Search does, thanks to deep collaboration between Google Search and its AI-powered vision assistant, Google Lens. Its ease of launch (a long press of the home button or navigation handle) belies its complexity and AI magic.
Circle to Search recognises the gesture and what you are circling around: it reads the object on your screen, or the text you want to search for, then starts decoding its contents. It ‘searches your thoughts’, or appears to do so. Your item is glimpsed by the AI, and it begins to swim into your view. Draw a circle around a grain of sand – or draw nothing at all, and just tap – and the AI ascribes meaning to your behaviour. In doing so, it transforms a primitive and low-level activity (say, ‘here I am circling around this thing…’) into something richly mediated (‘I’m looking for information about this object’). And in doing so, it turns searching into an act. It renders searching as easy as thinking. The first experience is creaturely. The second, human.
At first it’s only available on newer phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 or the Google Pixel 8, but soon, Google will start rolling out the feature for older phones, too, like with the recently released Pixel Tablet and the three-year-old Samsung Galaxy S21.
Its potential is limitless. Developers at Google are rumoured to be gearing up for Turl’s expansion into Circle to Search, and at Google I/O they promised to expand its reach into Chrome. That is, to ubiquitous AI. Rumour has it that Google has even discussed making iPhones into Circle to Search devices. The goal is nothing less than to make AI a utility, available to everyone.
Fundamentally, the game Circle to Search is a demonstration of Google’s ‘mission to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful’. But, it’s also an example of why the company won’t rest on its tech laurels. By endlessly experimenting with AI and machine learning algorithms, Google isn’t just building features, it is providing digital experiences that would have been impossible not very long ago.
Circle to Search is a feature, to be sure, but it’s also tangible evidence of the sort of creative genius that exists in those Google think tanks. We still have a lot to look forward to. Google has set itself up to lead the way as artificial intelligence begins to work its way into the consumer-level tools that we use every day.
In the tech world, innovation is still Google’s final frontier. The Internet behemoth has the audacity to dream up and execute some of the most ambitious ideas about how we should use technology in the future – and actually see them through. This is the third version of Circle to Search. It won’t be the last.
After descending to Circle to Search, and peeking behind the scenes at Google’s secret hat factory, I look around: the company is clearly more than the sum of its products. It’s a vision, an idea of the future in which technology serves humanity in subtler, more human ways. And if what I have seen so far is anything to go by, Google will cement its claim not just on the future of tech, but on the fabric of modern life.
