In today’s digital landscape, it might be a matter of survival of the fittest to keep up with the updates. Certainly if you’re handling an application as important as GOOGLE Maps. Just imagine the number of people who use it every day; those going about their business in cities, checking traffic, or searching out the quickest route to that nearby sandwich shop, or you – simply looking at the weather. If you have grown accustomed to looking at the upper left corner of your screen for weather information as you plan your day, you might want to prepare yourself. GOOGLE is once again shaking things up, this time by moving the weather information in the GOOGLE Maps app on your phone. Here is what’s new.
Until now, the weather feature on GOOGLE Maps was fairly new, but it became a standard part of planning anything from your afternoon stroll to a weekend getaway. So it was handy to be able to check whether glasses or umbrella would be useful, or assess the weather for your weekend away when the weather feature was right there on the map. GOOGLE has now said it is moving this information elsewhere in the app.
GOOGLE’s decision to move the weather icon down from the search bar is coming just months after GOOGLE Maps on iOS was given a major overhaul of the interface, with the number of tabs at the bottom of the screen reduced from five to three. Obviously, GOOGLE is trying to make its Maps app simpler and easier to use – and moving the weather feature is part of this wider effort to optimise apps and help GOOGLE’s users out.
And so, where is the weather widget on your home screen heading? It’s not moving too far, according to reports at 9to5GOOGLE, but it is heading to the module at the bottom of the screen. The change, for now, remains only in beta versions of the app, but the testing period is a sign that GOOGLE wants to get it right. You might have to retrain yourself on where you go to use the weather widget, but it’s a sign that, as we use apps more, they’ll hopefully work better for us.
To those accustomed to using GOOGLE Maps, this change might appear minor. But it points to a larger commitment by GOOGLE to iteratively improve the user interface and user experience with the app. It’s likely that most users will quickly adjust to the change, as access to weather information will remain largely unchanged – just in a slightly different location.
In essence, this is simply a reminder that technology is dynamic and changing, and that GOOGLE – like all other service providers with big data – is a high-flux organisation, always tweaking its service to give users what they need. It might not affect your day-to-day use to know that the weather information is no longer there – but it signals GOOGLE’s larger drive to streamline its products. Knowing this helps to keep us up to date with tools that we can use to maximise convenience, efficiency and planning.
The fact that GOOGLE keeps testing and tweaking to offer new features shows that the app can be moulded based on users’ feedback— and that the weather layer (it’s still there!) will continue to help us to plan our days and our trips. I look forward to the forthcoming changes, additions and refinements that I’m sure this multifaceted and evolving digital tool will bring.
Every time a feature, interface or service checked out on GOOGLE has gone through a redesign to make its services more intuitive, seamless and tailored to user’s experiences. A new app feature isn’t included just because it’s a new feature; it’s there because a team of designers has reviewed, debated, analysed and deliberated over incorporating it. Nothing is changed just to be changed, it’s changed because it’s been changed to make your interactions with GOOGLE better.
In the meantime, let’s not lose our vocabulary as we continue to adapt to these updates. I’m interested to see what other innovations and improvements GOOGLE comes up with to its suite of products. By staying flexible and keeping an open mind to change, we are in the best position to take advantage of these developments, ensuring we continue to benefit from GOOGLE’s quest for perfection. After all, the one thing in technology you can be certain of, is that it’s always changing. And GOOGLE is at the forefront of that.
