Factor in the inexorable cables and accoutrements overflowing from our desks in the age of remote working and you have the perfect recipe for a desktop shambles. A docking station is the modern office-workplace warrior’s best friend. Simply plug in the source and have all your essential devices up and running in a jiffy. The HiDock H1 docking station reports breakthroughs that promise to redefine docking stations, bringing in the empowering power of AI through GPT-4o (the forthcoming iteration of OpenAI’s chatbot). It’s time to find out once and for all if this is the ultimate merger of technology and the hardware it needs to thrive.
The HiDock H1 first launched with public fanfare via its Kickstarter page and then, almost immediately after, became available through the HiDock website. Costing $279 for the Slate model and $299 for the Platinum Gray, there is also a ‘slimmed back’ model, the H1E, which costs $229.
The HiDock H1 is designed as much to stand out as it is to fulfil a function: its retro-futurist aesthetic wouldn’t look out of place on the set of a ’70s sci-fi movie. This docking station has a wonderfully functional, yet completely uncanny look about it; large buttons and a dial recall past eras, while still serving their purpose perfectly.
The HiDock H1 is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Its diverse ecosystem covers a wide range of devices. It has nine downstream ports and a host USB-C port to connect all your devices simultaneously. It can provide up to 100W power delivery to your most power-hungry laptop to keep it charged and ready.
On the visual side, the dock powers two 4K displays at 60 Hz. Monitor tests showed it to be more than up to the task, even with an ultrawide monitor. It also passes data through some SD card readers at an impressive pace, earning its stripes as a productivity and leisure box.
HiDock’s self-described intention to incorporate AI ‘into a smart docking station’ is what ultimately defines the H1. The AI, powered by a third-party model – specifically, the OpenAI flagship GPT-4o – is designed for professionals with meetings to be transcribed and summarised (a service that users of the in-browser app would need an internet connection for). The service is new, but likely not a total game-changer for all users.
Its unique features are a thrill, but it bears comparing with experienced competitor products such as CalDigit’s TS4 or Kensington’s SD5750T Thunderbolt 4 dock which lack the AI aspects of the HiDock H1. These might suit some users better because they do everything a standard dock would normally do.
The HiDock H1 might be the first, but it is not the only device to offer an AI-augmented docking station that provides a collaborative computing experience in a sleek and appealing design. Nor is it the only hybrid imbued with limited AI functionality at a steep price. And that might just be too much of a steep price for some users, considering the fact that the AI integration in the HiDock H1 is, to some extent, relatively cosmetic.
Works well for: Techies and professionals who will use the AI-powered transcription and summaries extensively, and who want one of the most complete docking solutions.
Less attractive to: Users looking to simply dock can get better value by perusing the rest of the market’s offerings that enable connection without the AI add-ons.
But the fact that laptops have evolved into the hub of the digital lifestyle and that their connectivity options have shrunk in recent years as the devices themselves have become thinner and lighter, explains the need for the proliferation of docking stations today. This storyline reinforces the importance of a docking station that’s forward thinking — something that the HiDock H1 tries to be by infusing it with the latest AI technology to help digitally-savvy workers adapt to a changing work environment.
Ultimately, whether the HiDock H1 is right for you comes down to how much you value the artificial intelligence of its speakers and its aesthetic form versus the price you’re willing to pay for these qualities, and how they will fit into a particular pattern of needs and workflows in your life.
