Even more ice-bound than the first game, Frostpunk 2 – the billion-to-one odds of survival sequel to one of the best-received city-builder survival games of this globe-melting decade – ramps up the stakes of "build a metropolis in a world that’s too cold to live in" to fever pitch, and then adds a whole other menu full of complexities. Not only must players lead their people to thrive amid the horrors of a new ice age, but they must manage the multifarious issues of leadership and diplomacy among disaster zones. Welcome to the icy world of survival, strategy, and societal evolution in Frostpunk 2.
At the heart of it, Frostpunk 2 is a city-builder survival game, but it elevates beyond typical gaming scenarios by blending elements of strategy, resource management and moral policy. Designed by 11 bit studios, the game is a shining example of what the survival city-builder genre can accomplish, setting up players in a bleak, frozen wasteland gripped by perpetual winter.
The story in Frostpunk 2 takes place after the first game, in an ongoing fight against the cold with the city of New London. As the new Steward, you take over leadership of the city – a city that’s filled with people who survived the collapse of the modern world and now live either in peace or conflict. Your decisions will either unite or divide the different factions who live in the city. The story of the characters in Frostpunk 2 is integrated into the story of New London, reminding the player that your laws, and your commands about resources, could be the difference between life and death.
Frostpunk 2 piles on an enhanced scale in terms of city management and the diplomatic balancing act with the surrounding factions is now requiring more nuanced interactions than in the first game. The players have to balance feeding, warming and taking care of their people’s will to persist, while negotiating with faction leaders, whose support will save the city or whose resistance spells its doom. The Frostbreaking concept as well as oil extractor development promise more possibilities than being contained within the city walls, but it might be too late, or not have enough time to harness the advantages of it.
Using the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, Frostpunk 2’s shattered frozen landscape is as beautiful as it is deadly. The ways that players can build the city, the details on the characters, the nuanced snow effects, the light shifting around specific areas – all create an amazing sense of immersion in the world of this game set in a post-apocalyptic ice age. The audio takes its own cues from the growing pressures within the city as the score swells with tension and despair: it’s people fighting for survival against the ice.
For all the fun I had exploring the possibilities of Frostpunk 2’s world, there are still some accessibility hurdles to overcome (more ways to play would’ve been welcomed), and the game should’ve had more comprehensive options for disabled players as well. However, the inclusion of difficulty adjustments helps to bring the game closer to being truly accessible, by allowing players to dictate how difficult it is to survive long enough to bring a city into greatness, and in doing so, makes the entire experience feel more approachable.
Yes, if the thought of thawing your strategic mind and moral conscience in a frozen world strikes your fancy. Frostpunk 2 is much more: a leadership odyssey, an ethical crucible, a deep dive into human resiliency – and a survival strategy game, now writ large.
At the centre of Frostpunk 2 is home: a lamp glowing against the frost, a crowd of bodies that crave an arc of hope, and a battleground of ideologies clawing at the future. Home in Frostpunk 2 is not so much a location but rather a concept, a unified will to survive against the void. It’s about stumbling into the fireplace and striking matchsticks against its hot, naked surface, making tough decisions that cost the lives of those who look up to you, providing a stronghold for humanity to grow again in the face of a void.
See you through trials of New London, where home is in the beating of the heart of the city most strongly, in the laughter of schoolchildren singing under new laws, in the steam rising from those heat cores that keep the frost from your door, in the stories of people who embarked on a new world that you forge with each decision – with Frostpunk 2, home is not just where your house is.
Frostpunk 2 isn’t just an icy, snowy journey of survival. It’s a test of what it means to build a home in the midst of chaos. Are you ready to be a steward and lead your city to triumph over the frost, or to accept it and forge a new destiny for human kind?
