The difficulties in gamer-play can be related to a glass box. This metaphor illustrates the complex systems that commonly make games challenging for people: from controller design, complex or incomplete user interfaces, unintuitive automation features, poor mapping logic, long load times that interrupt play, to latency issues in networked interactions.
In the fast-changing digital frontier, inclusivity and accessibility are the absolute baseline for technological success. The latest innovation in Xbox gaming controllers is a product for disabled players that has just been rolled out by one of the world’s foremost digital giants. The all-in-one Proteus Controller, designed by Microsoft exclusively for disabled gamers, is the latest in a long line of offerings from this company that have kicked open the doors to one of the most progressive digital future spaces we have today. This release, and its intended use for the XBOX SERIES X console, means that this will be the most inclusive gaming platform in the market.
Accessible gaming occupies a significant portion of the codesign agenda in the global marketplace; on this year’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the Xbox gaming accessibility team announced the Proteus Controller, a remarkable new controller designed to meet the needs of gamers with accessibility needs. With its ‘snap and play’ elements in partnership with the Irish electronics firm ByoWave, the Proteus Controller represents a tour-de-force of technological compassion and lateral thinking, assembling a controller made for you and by you.
At the heart of everything is the Proteus Controller’s high-tech, modular Power Cubes, a series of detachable units that can be fitted with up to six different attachments — from classic controller features like D-pads and buttons to ergonomic grips and angulated adaptors — all tailored to an individual’s physical requirements, helping them construct a controller that not only feels right, but also improves their gameplay experience, no matter what physical issue they’re trying to overcome.
At $299 (which was reduced to $255 for an early bird discount), the Proteus Controller is pricey, no doubt about it. Then again, it’s not as if the users are being asked to spend staggering amounts of money on additional stuff to play video games. This is, after all, a genuine gesture toward inclusion and a marked degree of personal self-sovereignty. Proteus will launch later this year, and it will work with the XBOX SERIES X as well as the Xbox Series S, the Xbox One and PC.
The Proteus Controller is one of many examples of the XBOX SERIES X ushering in an inclusive gaming future: Microsoft makes accessibility-focused software updates and pushes game developers to begin designing their games for accessibility at the ground level as well. As gaming moves forwards, the XBOX SERIES X will be at the vanguard ensuring that everybody, everywhere, can game well.
These emerging forms of inclusive gaming technology, which include the XBOX SERIES X and the Proteus Controller, not only bring more people into the gaming community – they help to shift the way people think about disability and technology more broadly. When Microsoft explicitly attended to the needs of disabled people – non-gamers as well as gamers – worldwide, it showed us all what accessibility means for the creation of an equitable digital future. This isn’t just about gaming. And it isn’t only about disability, either. The question of how every industry can contribute to a more accessible world takes on greater urgency when we understand how these goals can be accomplished at the level of individual technologies.
The future of gaming is evident in the commitment of XBOX SERIES X, and of all the design concepts like the Proteus Controller, that gaming in the next decade has the capacity to be accessible, universal, and can enrich rather than disenfranchise or exclude. The process to fully accessible gaming is still in its early stages, but the more our industry strives, the closer we get to a world where no gamer need be left behind.
Xbox Series X by Microsoft is their new high-end gaming console. It is described as ‘wall-breaking’ its power, graphics and fast loading times allow you to game and enjoy some of the best character design, visuals and environmental design. This gaming console is the best ever made and gives the player a dazzling experience with its high-speed and realistic simulations of real life. The XBOX SERIES X is deemed generally inclusive and accessible because it allows all people to enjoy its games without barriers and in addition, it is a wonderful way for people to spend their free time, escaping the stresses of everyday life.
