The evolving digital orchard, where the rote and routine of technological advances reverberate through the climbing tendrils of innovation, might soon bloom another bud into a blossom of sophistication and utility – a bud from the once bare branches of Apple, which have been watered by the advances made by rivals who have slowly brought them back to life. After all, Apple has just released its latest software update, Open Garden: iOS 18.1. The technology company has planted its seeds for all to see.
At its core, it’s a beta version 4 of iOS 18.1: a sapling first raised inside the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s hothouse nursery. In its latest iteration, Apple has opened the floodgates, making the technology that began on those luxury devices available to every device with the ability to run iOS 18. Apple’s philosophy of enhancing technology for the masses seems clear.
Apple Intelligence is of course still reserved for the iPhone 16 Pro and the phones and tablets connected to that lofty branch of the higher-end line, but everything under the iOS 18.1 update – you know, everything – is full of surprises. Yes, you can now record and transcribe phone calls, a feature that’s long been associated with the higher-end phones and might have been exclusive to them not too long ago.
The new feature letting people record calls and transcribe them directly to the Notes app is a great example of something entirely new that’s easy and natural thanks to a little ingenuity. Now you can just tap an icon and it’s immortalised. It’s then – and only then – that Apple has achieved something slightly more than merely listening well.
Yet, there is a difference between the wide lower branches of the tree of iOS 18.1 features and the flowers which require the nourishment of Apple Intelligence to blossom. AI-generated call summaries remain the untouched temple of the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models. Apple’s two-tier innovation approach clearly demonstrates the Cupertino giant’s understanding of the varied needs among its user base: some users will be delighted with features that have wide application, while others will want features that their phone is uniquely capable of delivering.
Right now, the right to record calls comes on some very particular soil: in the United States, Australia, Mexico, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. And while it’s a geographically restricted crop right now, it’s a spreading ideology. Apple wants to plant those seeds everywhere, and before long, its users everywhere will enjoy the full autumn of features that is iOS 18.1.
If you decide you don’t want to beta test anymore, the release of iOS 18.1, which will be announced officially in October, will be available for all of us to have. We can have our little drink.
Apple is a technology company – yes, but it’s more than that: a harbinger of creativity and curator of modern-day miracles that blend aesthetics and usability. With the design of the original iPhone, Apple raised the bar for what personal computing could be, and raises it again every year in the iPhone’s successors. Apple is focused on the future, and it’s committed to limiting its environmental impact and ensuring the privacy of its customers. It doesn’t just invent the future, it grows it.
