At a time when technology pioneers are making exponential advancements in the field of AI, the development and integration of AI into our daily digital diet is reimagining what’s possible. Take social media platforms, for example – the 21st-century digital town squares, where the use of open AI technologies is not only changing how we interact with the platforms but also redefining the future of engagement and content creation. Let’s take a trip to the world where OPEN AI becomes the architect of your digital life.
Imagine chatting with a sort of AI that really grasps what you want to say, just like a friend would. Now that sounds like a future that’s not so far-fetched. If you are chatting with your friends or colleagues in Facebook Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp, chances are you’re interacting with an AI engine inside of Meta, called Llama. The interesting thing about Llama is that, thanks to its open-source architecture, it’s much more accessible than other big language models, and the beneficiaries of its developers’ work will be whoever moves fast enough to take advantage of it. Meta’s front-end open interaction design enables conversational chat inside the apps we already use, eliminating the hassle of having to subscribe to or download anything. Meta’s AI makes it as easy as opening a chat to feel that you’re prodding open some future of personal and business communication.
TikTok set the world ablaze with its virality of short videos, and now the app is using AI to spark a new kind of creativity. Its AI filters – such as the viral manga filter – are using object-recognition software to aid in the creation process, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. TikTok’s somewhat open celebration of AI helps creators weave together ordinary videos into something that’s not only engaging, but beautiful, ensuring their stories are as interesting and unique as can be.
Then Snapchat’s My AI brings the experience of chatbots – chatting to a human-like robot – into the chat stream where its users communicate. More broadly, Snapchat is letting its Snapchat+ subscribers use AI snaps where users can prompt the AI to generate or indeed transform images in variable ways. This allows each snap to be as spontaneous and personal as the creator desires. AI-generated digital art simply doesn’t get more creative than that.
Instagram is about to release an AI-powered tool that dubs and translates Reels on the go, aiming not only for language translation but for tone and emotion translation by the content creator. The new open disposition towards transcultural engagement inspires hope for democratising content creation that defies linguistic and cultural barriers – today’s undermines tomorrow’s. It is an Instagramlavium, an unifying open world where content is accessible to all, bypassing linguistic and political barriers using the power of AI.
But the adoption of open AI technologies across social media isn’t just a trend. It’s a revolution, and it’s changing the way we live online. From better AI chatbots and AI-assisted creativity to improved linguistic inclusivity across different cultures, these technologies are enabling new forms of interaction, creativity and global connection.
Behind this question is a fundamental idea that open AI represents a new species of machine-learning technology. Unlike proprietary AI technologies, open AI platforms and models are actually ‘open’ so that software developers and researchers can contribute to their iterative development and improvement. And since there’s no centralised authority owning it, we can all benefit from the democratisation of access to cutting-edge AI technology.
This brings OPEN AI into social media on a scale that will represent a giant step toward more responsive, human and collaborative digital interactions. Where will this lead as these technologies continue to advance? Our social worlds could indeed become more open and collaborative as they become enriched by new technologies. OPEN AI could, for instance, enable our digital and physical worlds to become one, leading to new relationships, unlike anything we have ever experienced.
