The video game juggernaut Electronic Arts (EA) has again enlisted the help of its award-winning developer DICE to create the next chapter in its highly successful Battlefield series. In the lead-up to Electronic Arts’ Investor Day 2024, gaming’s greatest craftsmen were announced, including Criterion, Motive and Ripple Effect. They will bring the modern era of Battlefield – like the ground-breaking Battlefield 3 and 4 – to life.
Developing the next Battlefield is a team dream – a collaborative effort to see where multiplayer warfare can go next. ‘[DICE is] leading the charge into multiplayer,’ says Byron Beede, Battlefield’s General Manager. If you’ve heard of Criterion Games, it’s probably because of the Burnout and Need for Speed racing franchises, but the studio has also become a veteran of multiplayer and single-player support work with DICE. Motive Studio, the team that remade Dead Space and is currently working on the single-player component, has contributed in a big way. And then there’s the new mode from Ripple Effect, a studio known for its Battlefield multiplayer and singleplayer expertise, as well as other FPS projects and other big development shakeups.
For more than a year, they’ve spent time on the battlefield, with internal playtests expanding to outside players. The single focus is to make sure the next Battlefield is not only an authentic representation of that time or place in the modern warfare era that fans have come to love, but to be an even more engaging and innovative entry in the series.
