The gaming world is abuzz as the PlayStation 5 (PS5) continues to evolve and we finally have a huge head-to-head in front of us: the slimmer PS5 Slim versus the ground-breaking original PS5. With rumours of an even more powerful PS5 Pro launching soon, it’s time to take a closer look under the bonnet on these two to find out which is the better console. If you’re about to buy a console or if you’re just a gaming tech enthusiast, knowing the differences between these two could be a game-changer.
This is where it’s really on: the PS5 vs its Slim – the two have digital and disc versions – and the cost of entry for the freshest gaming tech isn’t trivial: digital-only PS5 Slim: $449 Disc-inclusive PS5 Slim: $499 Digital-only PS5: $399 The disc version is still a cool $499 watch out, bargain hunters! The PS5’s price advantage won’t last forever … and that’s why it’s worth getting in before it’s too late.
The footprint of the console might be a dealbreaker and it is fair to say that Sony has done an excellent job slimming down the PS5 Slim from the original, achieving close to a 30 per cent reduction in volume. This said, the reduced footprint also has it still obviously competing in girth compared to its peers: this might be something that the potential buyer might like to think about.
You lift the bonnet and, mechanically, the PS5 and the PS5 Slim are identical inside, with no difference in what they can deliver. The additional 175 GB (giving a 1 TB internal storage for the PS5 Slim) means more titles can be stored on the internal drives than the original PS5, and therefore we give the PS5 Slim a small edge on the performance score.
And the PS5 Slim retains the digital/disc divide that still exists between some old and new generations of gaming, as it comes in both models: disc and digital. But the challenge of having to choose between some form of digital detox or the freedom of accessing digital libraries is alleviated for gamers in the disc model. Gamers wanting a lighter, slimmer silhouette, as the name suggests, will have another option: the Slim can be bought without a disc drive, but an optional attachment can be bought so that digital die-hards can have the best of both worlds at an extra cost.
In what is perhaps the most surprising divergence from the base PS5, the PS5 Slim does not come with a vertical stand, with Sony suggesting that you play it in a horizontal set-up out of the box, which perhaps isn’t exactly earth-shattering. Yet it seems to be part of a larger shift in thinking at Sony, where the concept of openness is being embraced, injecting a new dynamic into the gaming living environment and the way it accommodates different living spaces.
The PlayStation 5 was a powerhouse of gaming innovation in its old model, and in the new PlayStation 5 Slim, the brand has brought a compact, sleek and no-compromise gaming powerhouse to the market. It stills packs all the performance under the hood, with a small size that offers a much more comfortable storage space. Whether you choose the PlayStation 5 Slim for the small size, or the stylish design or even the small storage space upgrade, there is a clear choice to make.
The PS5 of Sony is fast becoming the talk of the town, and it seems like it is fast becoming the choice of gamers across the globe, thanks to its state of the art gaming performance, stunning graphics, and smooth gameplay. With the announcement of the PS5 Slim and the looming launch of the PS5 Pro, Sony has indicated its intention to revolutionise the PC gaming arena.
What truly differentiates the PS5 and the PS5 slim is ultimately a matter of priorities; price, performance, or looks? In the near future, the continuing evolution of the PS5 saga promises a dizzying array of ever more powerful systems. In that event, gamers around the globe can rest assured that the PlayStation brand will continue to lead the way into the future of digital entertainment.
