And yet, in a world of smart technology where every piece of hardware is designed to extend the capabilities of the human brain, Google have taken the next logical step. In announcing its latest update to a simple phone-based app for the visually impaired, Google have simultaneously raised the bar, both for everyone using PIXEL phones, and for all users, beyond those with impairments. This leap forward isn’t contingent on the latest PIXEL 9. It is part of the core smartphone experience, now serving a different purpose. For the first time, the latest smartphone technologies are selling a better experience to owners of older, not necessarily smart, devices. All what’s new really is the way we’re using it.
The Magnifier app, originally released as an important accessibility tool, has been updated to magnify text, details and even zoom in on objects up to 15 feet away for people with low vision. They too can interact with their surroundings through visual information, albeit aided by PIXEL cameras.
Google’s AI commitment is on full display at its Made by Google 2024 event, where PIXEL 9 series phones, a PIXEL Watch 3, PIXEL Buds Pro 2, and a slew of accessories are held up. But the Magnifier update that lets the camera search for text to annotate the view and make it easier to read a menu, or identify controls on a machine, or dig out a flight information sign in a noisy airport, is an important reminder that not everything worth demonstrating needs new hardware. Available on PIXEL 5 and later.
Although designed specifically for low-vision users, the Magnifier app is of use to all PIXEL users, not just because perusing the deli counter can sometimes be agreeable but also because I can now touch up my makeup with the new Selfie Illumination feature of the facelifted PIXEL 2.
Most noteworthy is the picture-in-picture format, which allows the user to nail a portion of their visual field and then keep it onscreen while they continue to navigate their surroundings. When combined with the ability to switch to different lenses – including a macro zoom function and a wide angle lens – the Magnifier app establishes a new context in which to explore the physical environment.
It has a nice touch: the Selfie Illumination feature around the front-facing camera, which lets you let in more light when you’re taking a selfie, turns on automatically at the same time as the Magnifier app. I particularly liked this trick in conjunction with the macro zoom, because it made close-up tasks such as makeup application (so that I could see everything under a magnifying glass) super-easy.
The fact that Google is making the Magnifier update available on cheap PIXEL 5 models – already futureproofed – shows that this software-fuelled way of tempering scarcity and equalising access is a smart business move. It’s prolonging the gadget lifecycle, while politically democratic. And it’s clear-cut proof that, in the innovation economy of the future, the hardware only ever mattered as a conduit for the software.
It’s been an example of the power of Google’s focus and resources to create a product that integrates AI into a tool we use every day. The PIXEL is more than just a smartphone. It’s the beginning of a world where technology becomes an extension of human potential, where more abilities and obstacles become less relevant and where anyone can benefit.
Gradually it dawns on you, as you roam deeper into the infrastructural framework of Google’s PIXEL, that the source of the magic is not the smarts, the design, or even the beautiful, high-resolution screen – it’s the individual, infinitesimal pixels that do all the heavy lifting. These elements of digital imagery, too small to be seen without a microscope, allow PIXEL to scrutinise the world and store it all, in ways that would have been scarcely imaginable just a few decades ago.
And with each new iteration, Google’s PIXEL brings us closer to a place where we can explore new horizons of what it means to have the world at our fingertips. We start by broadening what is possible for people with visual impairments (thanks to the AI-powered Magnifier app) and end by bringing PIXEL users closer to the answers they seek and the fun they want to have. PIXEL is powered by the best of Google, a marriage of engineering inspiration and creative ingenuity that brings us closer to a world where together we can all achieve more.
All in all, the update to the Magnifier app is a sign of Google’s continued dedication to innovation and accessibility. Using AI to its fullest potential and optimising it for PIXEL devices brings users that much closer to the future we dream of – one where technology and human aspiration are indistinguishable.
