The announcement is a sign of how our technology-driven daily lives are merging rapidly with the transformation of identity California was already a nationwide leader in this year’s government hackathon, called Hack for CA. Earlier this month, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that residents in the state will soon be able to store their driver’s licences and identification documents in their Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The new feature is expected to launch sometime this year. It’s a crucial step in the mainstreaming of digital IDs.
The premise of the programme is simple yet revolutionary: Californians will be able to carry and use their ID in digital form, from their iOS and Android Wallets. The digital version is as acceptable as the physical for age verification at the theatre, banking account identification, and other tasks where a physical ID has been necessary.
Security is a major concern often cited with digital IDs. The California DMV has publicly clarified that the digital versions will have ‘the same level of security, authentication and control’ as the physical equivalents. Private information is kept private at the highest level – and you as the bearer of the ID will hold the keys on when and how they are shared.
California is far from the only state to turn to digital IDs: it’s been joined by Arizona, Colorado and Maryland, and more are likely to follow. But thanks to some high-powered friends, including Apple and Google, the state may be the first to bring digital identification to scale.
The role that Apple and Google have played in the development is crucial as both companies have pledged to make this a reality – announcements rolled out in 2021 by Apple and 2022 by Google who integrated it into its Wallet app. The fact that these tech conglomerates want to facilitate the rollout of this user-friendly experience for millions of Californians is a testament to the power of tech collaborations to improve public services.
The California DMV says it will announce the rollout and availability soon and, as of now, the exact date is under wraps. But be warned: the announcement of this digital ID initiative has definitely signalled a change that’s coming to the way identities are given and checked online.
Digital identification is only one part of the way the digital giants Google or Apple are redefining what it means to have common aspects of daily life be convenient and secure. With digital ID, you could configure your state ID or driver’s licence in the Google Wallet app, for example, and bring it with you on your Android phone as part of a digital wallet. You could also expect to keep your security handkerchief in the cloud and have it available anytime you need it, just as all your other apps do.
The story of digital ID in California, where the DMV teamed up with Apple and Google and others, is a story of innovation, security, and user-oriented design. As we enter that digital wilderness where everything becomes digital, it is clear that we’re at the dawn of a new way of thinking about and using identification. It will make our lives a little easier and a lot more interesting. The security frameworks are in place, and the convenience is ours for the taking. Digital ID is coming, and when it does, it’s not only shiny but also here to stay.
