The annual Metaverse event is here. From a world where the transformation to digital has only just begun, Meta Connect 2024 will be the ultimate test to bring tomorrow’s dreams a little closer to reality. And everyone knows, this year’s show is bigger and better than ever! How will this year’s event bridge the gap between today and the future of XR?
The heart of Meta Connect always tends to pump the most excitement around announcements in hardware, and it looks like 2024 is shaping up to be no different. Sources close to XR Today have revealed another potential paradigm shifter, a device that sounds poised to bring XR out of exile whilst bringing the high cost of entry to XR down for everyone, whether it be organisations ranging from small SMBs to enterprise institutions or everyday consumers. We are talking about the Quest 3S headset.
The Quest 3S is conceived not just as hardware, but as a conduit into a realm of fantasy without a mortgaging of the conscience. The chief executive officer of ARuVR, Frank Furnari, says: ‘We think here that you have to add affordability and accessibility to XR, that you have to bring XR to the masses.’ Intended as an entry-level XR product, the Quest 3S will introduce many more people to immersive and spatial computing, from gaming to professional training, at a price point that encourages its adoption.
Connect isn’t just about revealing new devices; it is about augmenting the user experience, making it simpler to slip into other worlds. The 3S is this mission embodied, intuitive and simple to use, woven into the connective tissue of daily life.
When it comes to augmenting the human eye, Meta has ambitions for more than just headsets. It hopes to refract our daily vision through next-gen smart glasses as well. Its partnership with Ray-Ban is already off to a promising start, and Meta has big plans for the future. ‘AI is the missing technology that AR glasses are waiting for,’ Furnari told me. ‘Let’s see in 10 years if glasses are as essential and intuitive as smartphones in our lives.
The concept of smart glasses fuelled by AI opens up a whole universe of possibilities and applications. It is no longer a mere gadget, but a powerful means of accessing and constructing our world and our relationships with others. Meta Connect 2024 might offer us a preview of what those devices will do to draw us even closer to our environment and to each other.
With emerging technologies along the XR ‘stack’ – hardware, software, peripherals and so on – vying at the cutting edge of the path to the metaverse, R and D is crucial to the vendors competing to get there first, according to TC Sotto, vice president of product marketing at Meta. The company, with its deep-pocketed investments and visionary leadership, is innovating with an eye toward immersing the world – literally. ‘Large companies have a huge role in this – R and D for us and like us are very important in order to be able to make something commercially available at scale,’ says Furnari.
Meta Connect not only brings the latest advancements to light, but also leads the industry. By bringing together passionate members of the XR community, Meta is setting the standard for a future with ubiquitous XR – one in which it is woven into every part of how we engage with the world.
With the next edition of Meta Connect just months away, anticipation is already mounting for what Meta will unveil. Meta Connect 2024 will be more than just an event at which Meta showcases its new products – it’s a glimpse into a future where technology will mediate new realities, experiences and new kinds of interaction.
Devices such as the Quest 3S and the next-gen smart glasses represent more than just a state-of-the-art technology in the XR space; they embody a plan to make XR an inclusive part of the consumer electronics landscape. Our dream is to link worlds – to merge the digital and physical and open up the potential for experiences that enrich, empower and transform.
At its heart, Connect is a push, beyond the product launches, for the force that technology can bring to bear for our connections. XR devices that are widely accessible and affordable, or smart glasses that blend beauty with unobtrusive functionality, Meta’s vision of connected living – where our reality becomes enriched and enhanced with the power and potential of AR – is the promise of potential we need to embrace.
One thing’s for sure: when Meta Connect 2024 rolls around, you can be sure there will be more connections to be made.
