Gaming in this era of convergent entertainment is unlike any other before it, and this synergy between Amazon and Valve’s Steam Deck to drastically change the way people play games is incredibly exciting. There are more than 40 free games that Amazon Prime members can play on the Steam Deck.
There’s a new digital gaming ecosystem coming online as Amazon Prime and Steam Deck come together, tapping into Amazon’s membership base of more than 200 million people to deliver a growing amount of games to the portable PC. The deal integrates existing Steam Deck functionality, which already gives users access to the entire Steam game library if they pay a monthly subscription or buy the games outright. The Amazon Prime addition builds on this library for users of the handheld. An active membership in Amazon Prime is your key to unlock a video game treasure trove.
Amazon isn’t just opening the door to a few games. It’s opening a vault where Prime members can walk away with more than 40 AAA Steam Deck games at no added cost, as long as they act quickly because time’s running out on these juicy analytical offerings. As of 18 September, two gems in the list, The Invisible Hand and Maneater, disappeared. But what’s left is a treasure trove of AAA games that are sure to make your hand wallet-empty.
What I found most interesting here is the experience of getting the game: you don’t normally get it via Steam, not at all. In fact, if you buy any of these Steam-exclusive games, you’ll be driven to the Epic Game Store, Amazon Games Store, or GOG to get your prizes. But don’t worry, because the Steam Deck comes with the Heroic Games Launcher, which is a tool that grabs all your accounts for you, and integrates with the Steam app to allow you to download and run the games directly from your Steam Deck without having to be in the portable mode.
Here’s the full list of adventures, warfare and storytelling awaiting you. An opportunity to expand your own games library, to see things you wouldn’t have otherwise, to have adventures you otherwise wouldn’t take, all from your palm.
And the Steam Deck represents one of the best handheld PCs you can buy today, not just because of its connection to Steam and all the best PC games that come with it, but because of how it rediscovers and extends the appeal of overlooked retro classics. And because of how it helps to blur the lines between work and play – an essential tool that, like a gaming laptop, you cart around whenever you want to play a game, but more than that as a core piece of gear that you will use often no matter what it is you’re doing.
Amazon’s investment in gaming goes beyond giving away free games to Prime members. This isn’t the only time the e-commerce company, whose standing Amazon Prime is meant to cement with buyers, has moved into gaming. Amazon’s own gaming development deals, and its purchase of Twitch, the leading live streaming platform for gaming, illustrate how much Amazon is wagering on gaming becoming a new entertainment option that it delivers exclusively to loyal Prime members with free stuff – from streaming video and music, to experiencing the ‘ultimate’ in gaming.
With Amazon continuing to experiment with its gaming business, and efforts like its free Steam Deck games for Prime members just the opening salvo, the futures for Amazon’s ecosystem and gamers both look bright. It’s an excellent time to be a Prime gamer.
