OnePlus 8 5G
Over the relatively short period that OnePlus has been around, they have made a name for themselves as a reliable brand. Many smartphone users turn to OnePlus when they want to have a flagship experience but don’t want to spend a fortune on it, and that has been true for all its flagship smartphones.
In April 2020, OnePlus launched the 8Pro and the OnePlus 8. Starting at $699, the OnePlus 8 was the most affordable 5G flagship smartphone on Verizon and T-Mobile. Well, you’re probably thinking, “what hardware features did the OnePlus 8 have to sacrifice?” You’re just about to find out.
First, the 8 has a couple of models. The 5G version has a slightly different design to accommodate the 5G antenna. If you’d like to connect to Verizon’s 5G network, then you’re asking for a specific OnePlus 8 model.
Close competitors of the OnePlus 8 include Google Pixel 5 and Samsung Galaxy S20. Comparing its specs with the Samsung S20, you can see just how well the OnePlus 8 5G version does and what compromises it made. The OnePlus 8 weighs 180g which is 17g more than the S20. It uses Gorilla Glass 5, and the S20 does better with Gorilla Glass 6. Its display type is a Fluid 90Hzz AMOLED with 402-pixel density. The S20 uses Dynamic 120Hz AMOLED with 563 PPI.
The 8 is a tad bigger, about 0.35 inches, but they use the same OS. They also use the same Qualcomm 865 5G processor and have 128GB inbuilt storage, but it doesn’t give the option of expandable storage. The battery unit of the OnePlus 8 is 4300mAh, while that of the S20 is 4000mAh.
This comparison won’t be complete if we do not take a look at their current prices. The eight now goes for $360 thereabout, while the S20 costs $509 in the same place. Now you are the judge.
The OnePlus 8 looks just as good as any Samsung flagship; it even has a curved screen. If you’d like to own a piece, you can sell your current device on Gizmogo for an upgrade.
OnePlus 8 5G Specifications
Design info: OnePlus doesn’t compromise its design, and that’s a reputation they’ve
made for themselves. The OnePlus 8 has a great design and superb build. In appearance, it can compete favorably with any high-end flagship device.
It has an aluminum frame and glass body in front and at the back and is finished in smooth and silky frosted glass, giving it the refined and premium look it deserves. It’s glossy and slippery, though, but fingerprints are hard to spot with its Glacial Green color. The Gorilla Glass adds even more colors of purple and pink; it’s hard not to fall in love with it.
The screen has almost no bezels as it adopted a curved display, and OnePlus removed the notch completely, leaving only a punch hole for the camera in front. The back panel holds only the triple camera in a vertical module in the center. Its 20:9 aspect ratio makes it a tall and narrow device and allows for more grip.
The power button is a bit too high on the right side with the notification slider. The volume rockers are on the left, USB port and headphone jack in their place at the bottom.
Audio info: Audio output is loud and doesn’t get muffled, and its bass is quite deep. Its loudspeakers generally have excellent performance. The headphone jack is just as good.
Capacity info: The inbuilt storage capacity of this device is either 128GB with 8GB RAM or 256GB with 12GB RAM. There’s no SDcard slot for expandable storage.
Size & weight info: It measures 160.20 x 72.90 x 8.00 mm and weighs 180 grams.
Display info: The OnePlus 8 features a Fluid AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It has a 6.55 inches curved screen with an 88.7% screen-to-body ratio. Its resolution is 1080 x 2400 with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 402. Its colors are great and its viewing angles; this display gives you nothing less than a flagship experience.
Camera and video recording info: The camera profile of the OnePlus 8 5G is a standard 48MP wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 16MP ultrawide lens, and a third 2MP macro lens in a triple rear camera. It has Dual-LED flash and takes excellent photos. It has a 2x zoom that makes it fun to take pictures of distant objects without losing any quality but can go even as far as 10x. It records steady and sharp videos in 4K and has an excellent stabilization feature that allows videos to be as smooth as ever.
Water-resistance info: OnePlus eight finally brought along the IP68 certification users have been waiting for. Still, this is only true for units sold in the US by Verizon and T-
Performance info: The top android phones of 2020 used the same octa-core Snapdragon 865 chipset that the OnePlus 8 had. It runs on Android 10, upgradable to Android OxygenOS 11 and Android 11.
Connectivity info: The communication features available on the OnePlus 8 5G include a 5G antenna, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, dual-band, hotspot, DLNA, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS with dual-band, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS, SBAS, NFC. There’s no FM radio, though, and it uses Type-C 3.1 USB with USB On-The-Go.
Battery info: This model has a 4G + 5G modem that we expect to drain the battery faster, but the device surprises us with fantastic battery life. Its 4300mAh battery is quite enduring, managing over a day of 3G talk time and almost 20 hours of video playback. It supports fast charging and wireless, reverses wireless charging too.
