Samsung SGH-A197

Do you want to sell or trade your Samsung SGH-A197?

Yes? Good, you’re at the right place.

But first, I need you to determine if you want to trade your phone for a better version, or if you want to sell it for cash?

After you decide, we’ll walk you through the steps to cash in or trade up.

In the meantime, let’s review your phone.

Build & Design

If you’re looking for a phone as a strict caller for a backup scenario, the Samsung SGH-A197 might fit your bill. It’s lightweight and compact design renders the A197 an ideal phone you can slide in the back of your pocket. It’s so small you’ll forget it’s there.

Now if you’re on the adventurous type, beware of the A197’s cheap plastic construction. If there was one word to describe it, it'd be meak. The construction isn't the best, the plastic feels hollow and the hinges are loose. One serious drop, I wouldn’t be surprised if the A197 broke on the spot.

Everything is tiny about this phone, including the monochrome external display. Despite it’s compact size, it still manages to display the date, time, battery life, and single strength. Customizables include changing the clock size and writing slogans. Unfortunately, the display doesn’t take selfies.

Flipping the phone open reveals the 2-inch internal display. The resolution is low, coming in at 160 x 128 pixels and 65K colors. It has good brightness. But the graphics and photos don't look great at all. You can change the backlight time, greeting messages, and font style and color.

Samsung manages to make a rather spacious navigation array in the A197. It has a circular toggle with a silver ring. The toggle keys slightly protrude, so it makes it easier to press. It also doubles as shortcut keys. You assign a shortcut to each of the four toggle keys. There’s also two soft keys, a dedicated camera key, talk and end/power keys, a clear key, and a shortcut to AT&T Mobile Care. Strangely, instead of the Ok button opening menu, it opens the Web browser.

The A197 tiny compact design starts experiencing diminishing returns with its keypad. The keys aren’t too small, but you’ll have trouble texting fast. In order words, stay clear of this phone if you’re big on texting. The keypad sits flush and has a cheap plastic feel. It does have a backlight, so it's easy to see in the dark.

Features

As you can expect, there’s not too much going on in the features depart. Flips phones aren’t exactly app friendly. And the A197 almost despises them. But you can still take your shot by going to AT&T’s App Center to download more apps. The only usable apps you get off rip without it costing anything is Tetris and Bejeweled. These games are only demo versions. To unlock the full experience, it’s going to cost you.

You can store up to 450 contacts. Each contact can assign up to five numbers and an email address. You can also store contacts to groups and personalized ringtones that you can even record yourself. If 450 contacts isn’t enough, the SIM card can store up to 250 additional  contacts.

Other organizing features include Alarm clock, calculator, calendar, memo pad, stop watch, and timer. There’s also a tip calculator, a unit and currency converter, as well as a world clock. The A197 supports Bluetooth and POP3 email services. So you can access the web-based emailing platforms of Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail.

The camera is everything you’ll expect in a cheap plastic flip phone. The highest resolution is 640 x 480 pixels. And the photo quality isn’t all that great. Simply, it doesn’t take good photos. The colors are dull and the images are prone to noise. But there are a few camera features that can touch up the photos a bit. There's a brightness meter, four white balance settings, seven color effects, and spot metering. Other features include a self timer, 4x zoom, night mode, and three shutter sounds. Don’t expect to record videos because there’s no camcorder.

Call quality is okay at best. While it doesn't happen often, audio cuts out frequently enough to be mentioned. The call is low with a bit of static. And it picks up a lot of background noise. The speakerphone has the same story. Calls are audible but volume is low and a tad bit distorted.
