And when Upgrade (2018) came out, that same niche celebrated. Critics and sci-fi writers loved it for its original premise and relentless action. Upgrade was box-office only middling but undeservedly so. It’s a cyberpunk film noir that layers near-future technology onto gritty human drama.
A paralysed and grief-stricken Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is about to receive a second lease of life – or so it appears. His wounded body is going to receive a high-tech spinal implant that’ll enable him once again to walk, and even take bloody revenge on those who murdered his wife. STEM, Grant Major and a sickle. But this is not a mere ride for gadget buffs: STEM has the ability to ‘upgrade’ himself, and also communicate with Grey, eventually employing him for a one-man war on behalf of the underclass. As a piece of flippantly violent fun, Upgrade is a pleasure for the human operator to drive. It deserves a wider audience.
Don’t let yourself be deterred by the prospect that a costume drama might turn out to be a bit ‘stuffy’ and slow. Jean-Marc Vallée directs The Young Victoria – released in the UK this summer, and starring Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend – with a lively modernity, which centres on Queen Victoria’s early years as a monarch and her passionate bond with cousin Prince Albert. It serves as a deeply moving, intimate portrait of one of the most famous figures in history.
There’s real chemistry between Blunt and Friend in which we sense, rather than see or hear, Victoria and Albert’s love story. This is not only a tale of royal family life in the 1830s; it’s a fascinating portrait of young love, royal duty, and the makings of the woman who became the long-reigning British monarch.
This charming Blake Edwards comedy, all but forgotten, is a mix of slapstick, romance and comic absurdism begging to be rediscovered. Dudley Moore plays Rob Salinger, a television reporter whose bigamy literally leaves a trail. The laugh-out-loud premise and quaint-by-today sensibilities should provide a welcome and hilariously archaic cinematic time capsule for anyone in the right mood.
