Even if you don’t need something today, every time I go to Amazon Prime and press the Prime Video button (or key, on my Fire Stick), I’m confronted by an unimaginable cornucopia of movies, cinematic works of art, and hours of frivolous entertainment designed to distract and surrender you to the irresistible knowledge that you don’t have to think at all, courtesy of Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker. But for those who can’t live without that thought they might once have luxuriated in, and who would rather navigate the dark seas of film preference with a measurably high success rate, here is our latest selection of under-the-radar Amazon Prime movies that you really ought to be watching at your earliest opportunity. You’re welcome.
Although there’s plenty of good content on Prime Video, it’s consistently large enough that some truly excellent movies can go overlooked. So this weekend, venture off the beaten path with these three Amazon Prime can’t-miss picks.
M Night Shyamalan, hailed at the turn of the millennium as the next Steven Spielberg, has had a checkered career with a slew of curious creative decisions. But with Knock at the Cabin, can Shyamalan finally be back in the game doing what he does better than anyone else? In this taut B movie, a gay couple and their daughter, vacationing at a remote cabin, are met by strangers who deliver a strange ransom demand: inevitably, there are shocking twists and implications, with a fine performance from Dave Bautista.

One of the most fascinating movies to upend that convention was Run Lola Run (1998), a film that treads upon the spectacle-heavy dynamics of many video games. The nihilistic, time-travelling ‘chase’ narrative of the film follows a courier trying desperately to replace the money his dope-smoking girlfriend lost. It’s extremely racing in its storytelling, yet the film reveals the narrative in three unique and powerful variations on how protagonist Lola rushes to try to save her boyfriend Manni within the same day.

Given a brief moment between his directorial masterpieces Se7en and the exquisite melodrama Zodiac, Fincher’s Panic Room could easily be forgotten, but, as a showcase of the craft of direction, it’s a vivid expression of his obsessions. Jodie Foster plays a divorced New Yorker who moves into a new home, taking her daughter Kristen Stewart along with her, and we watch as the pair are besieged in their new home’s panic room by a trio of criminal misfits. Like Hitchcock, Fincher is spellbinding as a director because of his acumen at managing the audience’s attention, by gradually building up atmospheric tension suited to each individual scene – in this case, by clearly delineating the geography of the film’s central space. It’s the quality of the screen confection, not so much the premise, that leaves me watching with delight.
