Navigating a sea of streaming content to identify a constellation of solid sci-fi is akin to locating a starry sky during the day, but in the digital aisle of Peacock, it’s worth locating a few stellar bodies in the sci-fi section of the often-woefully-generic streaming service, even if (or perhaps especially because) it often dwells in the Outer Bars of the Galaxy. So perhaps go get your popcorn ready, and launch yourself into the cosmos to identify three sci-fi movies that Peacock is offering over the next few weeks, but which will probably blink out by June. Wait, what? OK, May 2024. Go!
Bypass the ordinary and go light years with Richard B Riddick, champion of the far side of life — and legend on his own. Riddick is a universe in which the shadows are dangerous places where a man’s ability to survive depends on his wit and will. Marooned on a barren planet impeded with indigenous threats, he must signal for help, which in turn will draw the most ruthless bounty hunters from across the galaxy. But predators beware; underestimate Riddick at your own peril. This outing serves as a thrilling reset which positions Riddick on a canvas similar to his first appearance, but with a Richard that is deeper than ever before — and too entertaining to root against.
Justice comes in grim spades in Dredd’s foul-mouthed streets, where the line between good and evil is thinner than a stun baton, and where outlaws are put away with a final insult. The Dredd of Dredd is a low-budget beast, succeeding through the raw, uncluttered action of those old B-movies that know how to detonate a sun. Follow Judge Dredd and Cassandra Anderson as they hunt down the gang leader Ma-Ma to her penthouse fortress, where they have to fight their way floor by blood-oozing floor to the top. Dredd is an orgy of action for misanthropes who like their heroes on the downside of the universe.
It’s Galaxy of Terror, a schlocky classic that earns the ‘sci-fi bubblegum’ label by leaning into what made it horror more than sci-fi: a low-budget mix of sex and violence. Scary fun often veers towards campy, and this one doesn’t disappoint, going for broke in depicting fear and survival in the far frontier. The inhabitants of The Quest, a cosmic spy-chaser, drop into terror when they land on a planet with a sinister hidden agenda. Buckets of blood nicely compliment a dream cast that includes Ray Walston and Edward Albert. James Cameron made his feature film debut with the film, and a skeleton crew of fan favourites was his support cast. Galaxy of Terror proved yet one more of producer Roger Corman’s many legacies – a hybrid film for horror fans who wanted more than just sci-fi’s bubblegum.
For those with an appetite for the cosmos – or at least an appetite for books set in space – Peacock’s catalogue extends well beyond the sci-fi genre. On your trek through the entertainment galaxy, consider stopping off at these must-see destinations:
Or the galaxy, a Teeming powerhouse of stars and planets and galactic matter, the home of innumerable imagined stories, the milieu of science fiction, described here not just to mean those real vast formations of stars and planets, but also the vast array of imagined stories it invokes, stories where our imaginations are shown a thing or two about our fears and dreams and eternal searchings, projected in infinite space.
