What Personal Data Is Stored on a PlayStation and How to Remove It Before Selling

Learn what personal data is stored on a PlayStation and how to remove it before selling. Protect your privacy with simple steps before you trade in.

You probably assume a console only holds game saves, but your PlayStation stores much more: account details, payment methods, messages, capture media, trophy history, and system logs. You can remove nearly all personal data by backing up what you want, signing out of your account, and performing a full factory reset or initialization.

This guide shows what types of personal data your PlayStation may keep and gives clear steps to erase them so your information won’t follow the console to its next owner. Follow the instructions to protect your privacy and keep your digital life under your control.

Types of Personal Data Stored on PlayStation Consoles

Your console can hold account details, activity history, and linked-service data that tie back to you. These items include profile settings, local and cloud game saves, chat logs, and any payment or linked account credentials you used on the device.

User Profiles and Account Information

Your PlayStation user profiles store display name, PlayStation Network (PSN) Online ID, and the email address used for the account. Profile avatars, friend lists, blocked users, and privacy settings (who can see your trophies, messages, or online status) are kept on the account and can appear on the console.

Sign-in credentials aren’t stored as plain-text on the console, but authentication tokens and remembered sign-ins can persist. Your local console may also cache recently used accounts, user preferences, theme choices, and system-level settings such as language and accessibility options. These elements can reveal your identity and habits if left on a sold device.

Saved Games and Game Data

Saved games include progress files, in-game settings, and achievement/trophy timestamps tied to your PSN account. Many games store metadata like character names, in-game purchases, and chat history inside save files. Local save files reside on the console storage; PlayStation Plus cloud saves mirror these to Sony’s servers if you enabled cloud sync.

Game screenshots and video clips you captured are stored locally and may include chat overlays or your username in HUD elements. Some titles store additional personal data such as friend lists seen in-game or matchmaking history inside their own saved data packages.

Linked Accounts and Payment Details

When you link services—like Spotify, Twitch, or a social account—the console stores tokens that grant ongoing access until you unlink them. These tokens can provide entry to external services without reentering passwords. Linked accounts may also share profile data such as display names and avatars with your PlayStation profile.

Payment information used for PlayStation Store purchases is not typically stored as full card numbers on the console, but billing addresses, partial card details, and stored payment methods are associated with your PSN account. Wallet funds, purchase history, and subscriptions remain tied to the account and can be visible through the console’s account settings.

How to Remove Personal Data From Your PlayStation Before Selling

Start by ensuring your account access is removed, any saved data you want to keep is backed up or transferred, and the console is returned to factory settings so no personal information remains.

Sign Out and Unlink Accounts

Sign out of every PlayStation Network (PSN) account on the console and remove any account linkages. On PS5 go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and disable it, then sign out each user. On PS4 go to Settings > Account Management and choose Sign Out for each profile.

Deactivate the console as your primary system so subscriptions and licenses aren’t tied to the device. On PS4 select Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Deactivate. On PS5 check Users and Accounts > Other for similar options.

Also remove saved payment methods from your PSN account via the account management web page or the console’s Settings > Users and Accounts > Payment and Subscriptions. Finally, unlink any external services (Spotify, Twitch) from your PSN account through their account settings.

Back Up and Transfer Data

Decide what you want to keep: game saves, screenshots, video clips, and installed games. Use cloud saves if you have PlayStation Plus: upload saves via Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) or Application Saved Data Management (PS4).

For local backups, copy captures and saves to a USB drive. On PS5 go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your Console. On PS4 use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up PS4.

If you’re moving to a new console, perform a network transfer between consoles (both on the same LAN) or restore from your backup file after signing into the target system.

Factory Reset and Initialization Steps

Factory reset the console to wipe user data and settings. On PS5 go to Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console and choose to fully initialize. This removes accounts, saved data, and settings.

On PS4 perform Initialize PS4 by going to Settings > Initialization > Initialize PS4 > Full. A full initialization erases all content and restores factory defaults; do not select Quick if you need a complete wipe.

Remove any internal M.2 SSD (PS5) or external USB storage before selling if you plan to keep it. Record the console serial number and physically remove discs and USB devices. After reset, sign out of PSN on other devices and verify your account no longer lists the console as active.
