The world of gaming is on the cusp of something special. The universe of Elden Ring – the latest, greatest video game, at least by my estimation: a game of considerable depth and allure that has captured the imaginations of millions, with a mythos and atmosphere that is as intoxicating as it is dense and intimidating, a world that is as beautiful as it is punishing, with combat that is visceral, unforgiving, and deeply, deeply rewarding – is on the cusp of a new chapter. On the cusp of the release of the SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE DLC, potentially my final foray into the Lands Between. It feels like the final, true, biggest Elden Ring adventure of them all is about to begin. Will it live up to the hype? Are you ready to return to the Lands Between? Oh God, I have never been more ready.
SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE isn’t just any expansion: it represents the largest sidequest that FromSoftware has ever offered for an action RPG. Set in the Land of Shadow, a realm blanketed by the mysterious Erdtree, this DLC offers new stories in open plains that dwarf the world of Limgrave or Liurnia of the Lakes in size.
Throughout this journey guided by Miquella, you'll be venturing to the very core of a mysterious, war-torn land. The lore deepens the Elden Ring universe in ways both familiar and surprising. There are dozens of new enemies to vanquish and bosses to overcome.
The wait is almost over: the most significant update to Elden Ring’s narrative is almost upon us. Set to be released worldwide very soon, players all over the world will be able to return to the game that sparked a genre, and fan discussions will again be awash with tips on bosses and ways to manipulate the game world to your advantage. But when? And what are the details surrounding pre-loading and storage space? We’ve rounded up the latest announcements to share with you.
SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE will be available from 21 June 2024. Release dates and times vary between different platforms and regions, so that Tarnished from all around the world can start their adventure on the same day. Don’t wait for the last minute, though – be sure to preload your DLC so that you can start jumping straight into it when it goes live.
In this case, preloading will help you get in before the rush (availability varies by platform), and you’ll want to clear plenty of space on your hard drive: the download size is in line with the expansion’s scale, and brimming with stuff.
Elden Ring is already one of the great titles of gaming history, and SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE will deepen that further. With upward of 100 new weapons, hundreds of spells and goodies to unearth, and more, the DLC will seemingly make the experience far richer.
Whether you’re a longtime Tarnished or you’re experiencing the Lands Between for the very first time, there has never been a better time to explore. The DLC provides a mix of fresh challenges and answers to the lingering questions that were left unanswered in the conclusion to the main game. If you have a PlayStation, Xbox or PC, Elden Ring is available for you to play it there. You have no excuse.
There’s also an assortment of collectibles and content exclusive to each of the different editions of the DLC, so make sure you go for a package that will draw you most deeply into the Land of Shadow and have everything you might desire to enjoy your adventure.
Fundamentally, Elden Ring is an exercise in inventive storytelling, world design and imaginative gameplay – all of which are pushed to the extreme with this pumped-up DLC expansion. It’s a new frontier to explore, brimming with dangers, wonder and all the allure of the unexplored. Welcome back to the Lands Between. Keep every step you take in mind as you climb towards the Summit. Never forget with which obstacles you’ve confronted the World, and with what you’ve overcome this mystery. With the ring completes itself comes a new legend.
You find yourself, at long last, ready to answer. The way into the dark depths of Elden Ring leads on, my Tarnished friends. The story is not at an end. And the adventure is far from complete, as I have only found The End in SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE.
