As computers become better at ‘imitation’, training AI systems is a vast, ongoing and expensive endeavour. It will be technologically and politically complicated for many years to come. Meta's Strategic Pivot

Meta’s plans were grandiose, with a training data set of everything from news to music currently shared by users on the platforms – a massive corpus meant to make AIs more reflective of ‘the multilingualism, geography and cultural references of Europe’. Climbing to the top of AI Stan’s Mountain remains the highest priority for all the tech giants out there. GOOGLE is still all-in on AI and so is OpenAI. Companies from San Francisco to Singapore might be building algorithms at a breakneck pace, but they, too, find themselves caught up in a complicated dance of innovation in data privacy. Firms are trying to learn how to use our personal data responsibly. Not illegally. Not like Facebook – with a permission-first approach, with users’ permission, and with full disclosure.
