A Tiny Detail About GTA 6’s Multiplayer Has Leaked

Court documents have revealed a small but telling detail about GTA 6’s multiplayer mode, despite Rockstar’s efforts to keep it confidential.

A small but notable detail about Grand Theft Auto 6’s highly secretive multiplayer mode has surfaced unexpectedly through a UK court case involving Rockstar Games.

While Rockstar has slowly begun sharing information about GTA 6, which is currently slated to launch in November, the company has remained almost completely silent about the game’s multiplayer component. Given the long-running success of GTA Online, it is widely expected that GTA 6 will feature a successor online mode—possibly larger and more ambitious—but Rockstar has yet to confirm how it will work or when it will launch.

Now, thanks to legal proceedings, one previously undisclosed detail is known: GTA 6’s multiplayer has been tested with at least 32 players.

The court case behind the reveal

The information emerged during an ongoing employment tribunal in the United Kingdom between Rockstar Games and more than two dozen employees who were fired in October 2025. Rockstar claims the employees were dismissed for sharing confidential information in a Discord server. The employees, backed by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, argue the firings were an act of union-busting.

During a recent hearing, the tribunal ruled that Rockstar would not be required to pay back wages to the dismissed employees while the case continues. As part of the proceedings, Rockstar was compelled to disclose internal messages exchanged by staff members.

According to reporting from People Make Games, Rockstar’s legal representative appeared visibly uncomfortable when one specific message was read aloud in court, describing it as extremely confidential.

The leaked multiplayer detail

One of the disclosed Discord messages referenced Rockstar’s internal scheduling policies, claiming the company discouraged more than five employees from taking time off at once because it made it harder to organize multiplayer playtest sessions involving 32 players.

The message reportedly stated that absences complicated efforts to fill full multiplayer test lobbies. Another developer responded by questioning why that would be difficult, noting that Rockstar operates multiple QA studios and should be able to coordinate 32-player sessions without restricting time off.

That exchange is the sole source of the newly revealed detail—and it is the only concrete information currently known about GTA 6’s multiplayer capacity.

Why the detail matters, even if it’s small

On its own, support for 32 players is not surprising. The current version of GTA Online already supports 32 participants per session, typically split between active players and spectators. As a result, the leaked number does not necessarily indicate an increase in scale for GTA 6’s online mode.

It also remains unclear whether 32 players represents the final limit, an early testing target, or only applies to specific modes. Freeroam sessions, special events, or future updates could support more—or fewer—players.

Still, the significance lies less in the number itself and more in Rockstar’s reaction. The fact that the company considered this information sensitive enough to be labeled “highly confidential,” and allegedly disciplined employees over its disclosure, highlights just how tightly controlled information around GTA 6’s multiplayer remains.

What remains unknown

Despite years of anticipation, key questions about GTA 6’s online component are still unanswered:

  • Will it launch alongside the single-player game or arrive weeks later, as GTA Online did with GTA V?
  • Will it be a direct evolution of GTA Online or a more radical redesign?
  • How large will player counts eventually be on modern hardware?

For now, all that can be confirmed is that Rockstar has been internally testing multiplayer sessions with at least 32 players—and that even this minor detail was something the company clearly did not want made public.

As GTA 6’s release approaches, more information is expected to surface. Until then, this court-related leak stands as one of the very few concrete insights into the game’s closely guarded multiplayer plans.
