Welcome to our deep dive into what’s new on HBO and MAX in June 2024. Your movie lovers and your TV series aficionados alike will be happy to know that June’s arrivals come with a bit of everything, from the much-anticipated (and long-awaited) return of the majestic dragons of House of The Dragon in Season 2, to a bunch of movie titles that might end up filling your weekends with more zeal or just about as much disappointment as… well, expect you to be. But enough with the preamble. Let’s get to the details and see what HBO and MAX deliver to your screens.
The hit Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is returning yet again, breaking a two-year hiatus with a season comprising only eight episodes instead of the usual 10. It may not be reaching the dizzy heights of the series’ predecessor but, hey, dragons!
The dragons are back, but original programming is streaming in as well: HBO is airing a new series called Fantasmas, which has been getting good buzz, and a documentary called Ren Faire, which will hopefully become a classic. Plus, Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play is sure to be a powerful and thought-provoking presentation.
The movies opening in June are a bit of a mixed bag: they include some things that I’d be excited to see, and some I’d avoid at all costs. The list starts with utter disappointments such as Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore but it offers some hope with the 2013 Evil Dead remake and the classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Overall, it seems there will be something for everyone.
From the moving to the fanciful, MAX’s library expands this June 2024, with a wide-ranging selection of titles from the heartbreaking 50/50 (2011) to the whimsical Marmaduke (2010).
Season 1D (Cartoon Network) and Uncut Gems (2019) – two of my favourite storyworlds – are recommended viewing purely for their incredible plots.
With the exception of the flagship titles, the array ranges from series returning for new seasons, such as Craig of the Creek, to special original programming such as Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go, rounding out the MAX library. If you’re a fan of reality TV, documentaries or live-action specials, you’re covered in June.
And don’t forget about our editors’ picks, which include the best movies on HBO and HBO Max as well as our expertly curated guides to Netflix, Amazon, and other streaming services. And FYI for subscribers – HBO MAX is for US subscribers only.
MAX is not just a platform for broadcasting, or TV and cinematic content. In all, June 2024 on HBO and MAX is going to be a month of peaks and valleys, some beloved faves returning to our screens, other new offerings have the potential to take our breath away. Some of these selections will be controversial, I’m sure of it, but the very fact that there is discovery and delight in this selection of HBO and MAX selections, and that there is a universe of entertainment in our reach, is as stable as ever. So grab your remotes (and devices), set your calendars, and prepare to explore the multiverse of HBO and MAX this June. Enjoy the shows!
